Robert Guerrero: My career is going back to the top!

guerrero4By Dan Ambrose: 33-year-old Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (33-3-1, 18 KOs) doesn’t see his career situation as being in dire shape as he nears his January 23rd fight against unbeaten Danny Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. California. The Garcia-Guerrero fight will be televised on Premier Boxing Champions on Fox.

Guerrero has lost two out of his last four fights, and many fans believe that Guerrero deserved a loss in his last fight against Aaron Martinez last June. If you count that as a defeat, then Guerrero has lost 3 out of his last 4 fights since 2013. Surprisingly, Guerrero believes that his career isn’t going downhill. He thinks it’s about to start going uphill to where it was in the past when he was a top fighter. It’s been five years since Guerrero last held a world title, when he was the IBF super featherweight champion.

Guerrero vacated the title in order to move up in weights. The money obviously has been better for Guerrero as a non-world champion at welterweight than it was for him when he held the IBF featherweight and super featherweight titles.

“Danny Garcia is a tremendous fighter. He’s coming up from 140. He’s trying to take over the 147lb division,” Guerrero said to esnewsreporting. “You got to be ready for everything. You look at the strengths and weaknesses. A lot of people are saying I’m going to come and slug it out or I’m going to box this guy. People are going to find out come fight night. You’ve got make those adjustments during the fight, and this I what I plan on doing. I started to bang a lot; to try and muscle guys out and prove a point at 147 pounds. Most of the time, you take a lot of punishment doing that. I want to get back to what brought me there. This is one of those fights where you got to be ready to make adjustments because Danny makes adjustments,” Guerrero said.

It’s good that Guerrero finally realizes the mistakes he made in his fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr, Aaron Martinez, Keith Thurman, and Yoshihiro Kamegai. Guerrero tried to slug with those guys the same way he did in his fight against Andre Berto. It didn’t work well for Guerrero against those guys like it had against Berto.

“It might turn into a slugfest or it might turn into a boxing match,” Guerrero said. “I’ve got to take care of business. A lot of people are writing me off, saying it’s time that I hang them up. ‘He’s done. You don’t look the same.’ You never know what someone is going through. I had two deaths in the past two months before the fight. The only place I see my career going is right back to the top. I’ve been on my toes. I’ve been doing a lot of things in the gym that I haven’t been doing in a long time. I’m excited. I’m excited to get back out there and showcase,” Guerrero said.

If Guerrero loses to Garcia, he doesn’t necessarily need to retire. I just think that Guerrero should think seriously about moving back down in weight to lightweight or super featherweight, because I don’t see him finding any success at 147 or 140. The fighters in those divisions are just too good for Guerrero in my view, and I don’t see that changing.

“We want the big mega fights. It could be Canelo,” said Guerrero’s father Ruben Guerrero.

Ruben Guerrero shouldn’t be even thinking about mega-fights for Guerrero at this point. He should be just hoping that Guerrero can get past Garcia, because this is going to be a very difficult fight for him potentially. Garcia is one of those fighters that it pretty much impossible to beat by decision because he’s getting decisions right now in fights that he appears to lose.

When you get a fighter like that in the sport, you need to do something spectacular to beat them like either knock them out or knock them down so many times that the judges can’t possibly mess up the scoring. The problem with Guerrero is he doesn’t have the kind of punching power to knock Garcia down or knock him out. The only thing that Guerrero can do is to try and put pressure on Garcia and hope that he’ll wear him down enough to get a lucky stoppage.
