Nonito Donaire vs. Cesar Juarez this Friday

donaire7788By Chris Williams: #2 WBO Nonito Donaire (35-3, 23 KOs) will be facing #1 WBO Cesar Juarez (17-3, 13 KOs) this Friday night on December 11th in a fight for the WBO International super bantamweight title at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Donaire just turned 33 last November and he’s trying to rebuild his career following losses to Nicholas Walters and Guillermo Rigondeaux. Donaire has won his last two fights against Anthony Settoul and William Prado since being stopped in the 6th round by Nicholas Walters last year.

Donaire has supposedly trained really hard for the fight with Juarez. Let’s hope he has because he’s not at the point in his career where he can assume that he’ll win by just showing up with a pair of gloves on.

“I feel great, my mental aspect is on a different level and helps me prepare for this fight,” Donaire said to philboxing.com. “It’s amazing. This is the hardest I have trained for a fight. I am more committed and have direction in my training.”

It’s unclear if the fight between Donaire and Juarez will be for Rigondeaux’s recently stripped WBO super bantamweight title. The World Boxing Organization moved swiftly to strip Rigondeaux recently of his WBO title after he failed to defend the belt for a year.

It would be kind of funny if Donaire, the fighter that he easily beat in 2013, is able to win back the WBO title by facing Juarez. Rigondeaux wanted to face Donaire for a second fight in order to prove to the boxing world that his previous win wasn’t a fluke, but Donaire’s promoters at Top Rank never put a rematch together. Rigondeauix would have dumped at the chance to fight Donaire a second time because it would have given him a nice payday and he would have given him a lot of attention.

“it doesn’t matter. I am fighting for victory,” Donaire said about Rigondeaux being stripped of his WBO title and the title now potentially being on the line.

Also on the Donaire-Juarez fight card is unbeaten featherweight contender Felix Verdejo facing Josenilson Dos Santos for the WBO lightweight WBO Latino strap. This should be a better fight than the Donaire vs. Juarez fight, because Verdejo is the real thing, and has the kind of talent that will take him far.

He’s expected to soon capture one of the lightweight world titles in the near future. It’s too bad that Donaire isn’t the same size as Verdejo because it would be an interesting fight to see how Donaire matches up with him.
