Froch: Golovkin’s promoter doesn’t want him to come near me!

frochBy Scott Gilfoid: Carl Froch says he spoke with IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler recently about a potential catch-weight fight against Golovkin, and Loeffler didn’t want the fight to take place.

Froch says he got the impression from his conversation with Loeffler that the K2 promoter didn’t want his smaller 5’10 ½” fighter to come anywhere near him. Froch figures that his superior size compared to Golovkin put Loeffler off from the idea.

Froch says he can’t make 168lbs because it would be too hard on his body if he tries to melt down to that weight from where he’s at now since he retired from boxing last year.

The only way that a fight between Froch and Golovkin could take place is if Golovkin moved up to light heavyweight to possibly face Froch at 172 pounds. That would be a 12 pound weight move by Golovkin from his normal weight class of 160lbs. Golovkin usually rehydrates to around 170lbs for his fights, but you’ve got to figure that Froch would come into a fight against Golovkin close to 190.

“I spoke to Tom Loeffler and we were just chatting about fighting at a catchweight but he didn’t want him [Golovkin] to come near me,” Froch said to skysports.com. “He [Loeffler] didn’t say anything, he didn’t want to agree to anything – it didn’t even sound like he wanted him to even come up to 168lbs. As soon as that was mentioned he was straight on to talking about fighting Canelo [Alvarez].”

The problem with Golovkin agreeing to fight Froch at 172 or at any weight now is that Froch has been out of the ring for a long time, and he’s quickly being forgotten by boxing fans. It’s not a fight that would sell to the U.S boxing public if Golovkin were to agree to fight Froch. Heck, I don’t even think the UK fans would be all that excited about a Golovkin vs. Froch fight at this point.

Like I said; out of sight out of mind, and that’s clearly the case with Froch. He really hasn’t had a competitive fight since 2011, when he lost to Andre Ward. That’s when Froch stopped fighting really dangerous guys. Since then, Froch was involved with mismatched against domestic fighter George Groves, Lucian Bute and Yusaf Mack.

It’s been too many years since Froch was involved with a tough opponent that the U.S boxing fans really care about. Bute isn’t a star in the U.S, so Froch’s fight against him didn’t even register on the radar screen. The fact of the matter is Golovkin gains nothing by fighting Froch, because the American boxing public wouldn’t give a fig about the fight.

HBO wouldn’t likely bother to even consider putting Golovkin vs. Froch on pay-per-view, because no one would likely buy it. As such, there’s no upside in Golovkin fighting an aging guy like Froch, who isn’t known in the U.S by the casual boxing fans, and who stopped fighting the quality fighters back in 2011. Sorry, I don’t consider Groves, Mack and Bute quality fighters. To me, quality fighters are guys like Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell, both of which Froch arguably lost to in the Super Six tournament.

“When he took one look at me, shook my hand and looked up at me, I think he thought, ‘Blimey, I didn’t think he was that big!'” Froch said about Loeffler. “Golovkin hasn’t fought anyone near my size. The last guy [David] Lemieux was probably his biggest but is he going to jump in with someone as big as me, who is proved at world level, and is bigger and stronger?”
Froch is bigger than Golovkin, but obviously not more talented.

The fact that Froch went life and death with Groves in their first fight tells you that he wouldn’t be competitive against Golovkin. The question of who would win in a fight between Golovkin and Froch was pretty much answered when we saw Froch struggle badly in his first fight against Groves. We also saw how Froch arguably lost to Andre Dirrell in the Super Six tournament. Dirrell is a fighter that Golovkin beat in the amateur ranks in the 2004 Olympics. If Froch couldn’t beat Dirrell without controversy, then that suggests that he wouldn’t be able to compete against a talent like Golovkin.
