By Chris Williams: Unbeaten #5 WBO lightweight contender Felix Verdejo (19-0, 14 KOs) destroyed an over-matched ring rusty Josenilson Dos Santos (27-4, 17 KOs) by a 2nd round TKO to retain his WBO Latino 135lb title on Friday night at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The 22-year-old Verdejo nailed Dos Santos with a perfect right hand to the head in the 2nd round to put him down on the canvas. To his credit, Dos Santos got back to his feet, but he was too hurt to be allowed to continue. The referee Roberto Ramirez Jr. stopped the fight at 2:21 of the round without giving Dos Santos a second chance.

Top Rank really made it easy for Verdejo in selecting Dos Santos for him to fight instead of someone good. Dos Santos hadn’t fought in 14 months prior to this fight tonight, and he was stopped in the 6th round in his last fight by Paulus Moses in October of 2014. Moses isn’t considered a puncher. Dos Santos was also stopped by Miguel Angel Gonzalez in the 8th round in 2013.

I think it’s time that Top Rank takes the training wheels off of Verdejo and let him fight for a world title against one of the lightweight champions. Feeding him guys like Dos Santos is a waste of time because he’s too good for these guys.

In a straight up robbery, Nonito Donaire (36-3, 23 KOs) defeated the tough as nails Mexican Cesar Juarez (17-4, 13 KOs) by a controversial 12 round unanoimous decision on Saturday night to win the vacant WBO super bantamweight title.

The judges’ scored the fight 116-110, 116-110 and 117-109. I had Juarez winning the fight by a narrow margin because he clearly won rounds 7 through 12, and was robbed of a knockdown in the 10th, when he dropped Donaire with a left hook to the head. It’s unbelievable that Juarez didn’t get credit for knocking Donaire down in the 10th. It was just a really poor call by the referee because it was a left hook to the head that put Donaire down.

Juarez was able to trap Donaire against the ropes in every round in the second half of the fight and punish him with flurries and body shots. Donaire did a good job of moving his head to avoid some of the punches, but he couldn’t do anything to get out of the way of the body shots that were constantly hitting him.

Donaire’s left eye was black and closing by the 9th round. Surprisingly, it didn’t close all the way up.

Juarez hit the deck twice in the 4th, but he still did enough to deserve the decision.

In the 12th round, both fighters just stood and flurried on each other. Juarez got the better of Donaire and him bleeding from his right eye. Juarez’s nose was bleeding and looked to be damaged badly.

I think this is the best fight I’ve seen this year. It was a great fight.

At 33, I think Donaire has seen better days. He’s the WBO champion now, but I think he’s running out of time due to his advanced age. He looked like an old man tonight with the way he was trapped against the ropes over and over again by the younger 24-year-old Mexican fighter.
