Chisora stops Erdos; Pulev destroys Harris

By Scott Gilfoid: In a card filled with hopeless mismatches, struggling heavyweight Dereck Chisora (23-5, 15 KOs) got off on the right foot with his new promoters at Sauerland Events in destroying a horribly over-matched journeyman Peter Erdos (9-9-4 3 KOs) by a 5th round stoppage at the Inselparkhalle, Wilhelmsburg, in Hamburg, Germany.

Chisora’s new promoters made sure that he looked good in his first fight with them by putting him in with a 3rd tier guy. There’s no such thing as a 4th tier fighter in my view, but Erdos came as close as you could to a 4th tier guy. Chisora didn’t even look good in beating this guy, because this is a fight that should have been over in the 1st round if Chisora had the talent to do the job. Chisora was taking some head shots, and it was sad to see. I mean, the fight was a mismatch, but even against this kind of competition, Chisora couldn’t dominate.

This is Chisora’s third easy opponent since his stoppage loss at the hands of Tyson Fury last year in November 2014. What’s unclear is why Chisora’s management has taken him so far back to the basics by matching him against such dreadful opposition.

Normally when a fighter loses to a top tier guy like Chisora did, they’re brought back against 2nd tier opposition in their first fight back and then put back in with 1st tier guys in their following fights. But in Chisora’s case, he’s been brought all the way back to 3rd tier and kept at that level instead of gradually moving him back up to the 1st tier guy. In Chisora’s three fights since his loss to Fury, he’s faced Peter Erdos, Marcelo Luiz Nascimento and Beka Lobjanidze.

In other action on the card, heavyweight contender Kubrat Pulev (22-1, 12 KOs) stopped 39-year-old journeyman Maurice Harris (26-21-2, 11 KOs) in the 1st round of an 8 round fight. Pulev, 34, flattened Harris with a nice body shot. The official time of the stoppage was 1:59 of the round. Harris came into the fight with 6 defeats in his last 9 fights. It’s hard to believe that Harris was at one time one of the top heavyweights in the sport 15 years ago. A lot of things change when fighters get old.

Heavyweight prospect Adrian Granat (10-0, 9 KOs) stayed unbeaten with a 1st round knockout win over high level journeyman Michael Sprott (42-25, 17 KO)s). Granat flattened Sprott with a right to the head.

Untested junior middleweight contender Jack Culcay (22-1, 10 KOs) labored to an unimpressive 12 round unanimous decision over Dennis Hogan (22-1-1, 7 KOs). The final judges’ scores were 117-111, 119-109 and 116-112,

Culcay dominated the fight for the most part, but he was still getting nailed a lot. Culcay didn’t look powerful or nearly as talented as the top junior middleweights like Jermall Charlo, Jermell Charlo, Erislandy Lara and Demetrius Andrade.
