Can Canelo beat Golovkin?

1-canelo-cotto-results (17)By Yannis Mihanos: In many of his past fights, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) appears to have had a weight advantage over his opponents. Often times, Canelo has looked like the bigger and stronger guy over his smaller opposition.

Canelo dishes punishment with his power punches and demoralizes fighters appearing unfazed from their attacks and punches. His last victim was WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, looked in front of him half the size of the 25-year-old Canelo.

IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin appears to have a full boxing arsenal of punches. No one escapes from Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs). Many top names in the middleweight division fear and avoid him. Floyd Mayweather Jr. retired rather than face Golovkin. Maybe that was a good decision for him.

Canelo has improved since the defeat by Mayweather two years ago in 2013, but he still hasn’t changed a lot. Canelo is a fighter with advantages but also limitations.

Canelo’s presence in the ring is basically a one-way street; he doesn’t chase and prefers to exchange. It’s the way he has been conditioned for all these years since an amateur.

GGG, when he comes in the ring, can use more than one strategy, because he has many boxing skills to use: flexible, fast, strong, and intelligent.

GGG and Canelo share similar kind of integrity and determination. They both have come here for greatness. They both have come here to be the best and fight with the best.

GGG appears to be at the peak of his career and that is what appears to worry Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions. Oscar is thinking a lot about what may follow if Canelo will be defeated easy by Golovkin. Today, Canelo is the best ace he has in his pocket and so he wants to protect and preserve him the best way he can.

GGG can’t wait anymore because like I said he is at the top of his game. It is stupid to avoid taking the big fights. But he is not a slot machine and he knows it. His main business remains his reputation inside the ring.

The way Golovkin dismantled former IBF middleweight champion Lemieux made a statement to all out there and showed his masterclass.
When Golovkin eventually faces Canelo in the future, Canelo will likely appear the bigger guy. Unlike Cotto, GGG cannot come as half a fighter.

GGG has more than one way in breaking down an opponent. Canelo will get his chance only if GGG lets him come close enough.

There is definitely a difference between Canelo and Golovkin, and is not that of the age; it’s the same difference when Canelo faced Mayweather. It’s the difference when one elite meets a talented fighter. That said, there is still a lot of ground to cover until the contract is signed.

Overall, I like Canelo and Golovkin, and I support them on each of their fights because I think they are a good thing for boxing, but if I could pick a side, I would definitely put my money on GGG.
