Broner: Whoever thinks Pacquiao will beat me is a damn fool!

1-LR_BRONERALLAKHVERDIEV-PRESSER-0019By Chris Williams: Four division world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner (31-2, 23 KOs) took a shot at Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) and his legion of fans today on social media by saying that whoever thinks that Pacquiao can beat him is a fool. This comes after Broner, 26, recently said that he wants to beat the Pacquiao and him back to the Philippines in defeat so he focus on his political career.

Despite the talk from Pacquiao’s promoters at Top Rank about the Pacquiao-Broner talk being little more than nonsense, it seems that it’s a fight that can happen on April 9th next year in Las Vegas, Nevada. It seems that Pacquiao might not too be happy with the three less than thrilling choices that his 84-year-old promoter Bob Arum selected for him to pick from in Tim Bradley, Terence Crawford and Amir Khan.

You can make an argument that those choices are similar to some of the recent ones that Arum has made in selecting Brandon Rios and Chris Algieri for Pacquiao to fight instead of selecting big names that guaranteed a lot of PPV buys on HBO. Crawford, Khan and Bradley are likely opponents that would bring Pacquiao 400,000 PPV buys or possibly a tad bit more.

Broner is someone that could easily bring in over 1 million buys for Pacquiao due to Broner’s charisma and ability to sell fights.

It’s hard to argue with Broner about him thinking that anyone that thinks Pacquiao would win is a fool. I personally think Broner can take a page out of his big brother Floyd Mayweather Jr’s play book to defeat Pacquiao without any problems.

Like Mayweather, Broner has an excellent jab, great counter punching ability and good movement. Those are the three keys to beating Pacquiao. You’ve got to be able to counter punch, and you definitely need a great jab and the ability to move a little bit. Mayweather was able to pick Pacquiao off with right hands all night long in their fight last May to keep him from being able to attack the way he wanted to.

Before long, Mayweather had trained Pacquiao not to attack at all. It was very interesting the way that he domesticated Pacquiao by turning him into a harmless opponent by the 4th round. The last eight rounds were just too easy for Mayweather because Pacquiao had been trained so well not to step out of line for fear of being lashed by Mayweather.

I get the feeling that Pacquiao does not fall in lock step to Arum’s gang of three choices of opponents for his next fight. Pacquiao has accepted many of Arum’s opponents in the past and the PPV buys have resulted in less than earth shattering.

In hindsight, Pacquiao should have stood up on his hind legs and told Arum ‘no’ when he offered up Rios, Joshua Clottey, Chris Algieri, Shane Mosley, Antonio Margarito and Bradley [for second fight] for him to fight instead of insisting that he get some exciting talented fighters with a name and still in their prime.

There was nothing wrong about Margarito and Mosley when they were in their primes of their career, but there was everything wrong with them when Pacquiao fought them. It was even worse with Margarito, because he had the taint of the hand-wrap scandal following after him when Pacquiao fought him.

In my view, Broner will bring in the most money than anyone that Arum has in his gang of three candidate list. If Arum wants to subsidize a fight for Pacquiao against the likes of Crawford, Khan or Bradley by paying the likely difference in money lost in fighting them rather than Broner, then I think Pacquiao should go for it.

I think Pacquio vs. any of those fighters brings in a little 400,000 PPV buys. A fight against Broner, as I said, will likely bring in over 1 million buys. If Arum is willing to give Pacquiao the difference in lost PPV revenue by him fighting Khan, Crawford or Bradley, then I think Pacquiao should fight one of them. If Arum doesn’t want to do that, then Pacquiao should fight Broner and take the bigger money.
