Ortiz, 36, says he will fight whoever his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions tell him to fight. But first things first, Ortiz must get past his test tomorrow night against the 31-year-old Jennings in their fight on HBO Boxing After Dark at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York.

Ortiz might be better off looking to fight Deontay or Wladmir next if his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions can get him one of those two fighters. Waiting for his shot against WBA “regular” heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev could prove to be a lengthy endeavor for Ortiz. It might not be a good thing for him to wait around for too long, given his age.

Ortiz does not have many years left in the sport at the top of his game like younger heavyweights do. If Ortiz has to wait 5 to 7 years to get a big fight, he could be too old by that time, because that would put him into his 40s, and there are not too many heavyweights still capable of fighting at a high level at that age range.

“I want to face the best,” said Ortiz said via RingTV.com. “I have one of them ahead of me on Saturday and he is a quality opponent. I need to leave this fight behind and then, Golden Boy (Promotions) knows that I want the best out there. I can fight whoever they put in front of me. Whatever it takes to prove I am the best in the division. Be it (Deontay) Wilder, or (Wladimir) Klitschko if he returns, or anybody ahead of me on my road to the title, that’s who I would want to face.”

Ortiz would be an excellent opponent for Wilder or Wladimir, especially with Wilder. He likes fighting guys that come straight at him, and he has no problems fighting southpaws. Wladimir would be a different story though, because he doesn’t seem capable of pulling the trigger on his punches any longer If Wladimir were to fight the 6’4”, 239lb Ortiz, he would absolutely need to be able to pull the trigger on his punches for him to have a chance of beating him.

Wladimir would not be able to survive a 12 round fight just running around the ring, holding and looking to survive against Ortiz, because he would get caught eventually and likely knocked out.

You can’t stall against a heavyweight with the kind of punching power that Ortiz has going for him. The Cuban transplant, now living in the United States, is just too dangerous.

Ortiz has the talent to become a big star in the sport if he can get the important fights while he’s still in his prime. It would be sad if a talent like Ortiz couldn’t take advantage of his ability because of the politics of boxing.

Prediction: Ortiz KO 6 Jennings.
