By Dan Ambrose: 44-year-old #5 WBA welterweight contender Shane Mosley (49-9-1 41 KOs) stopped Patrick Lopez (23-6, 14 KOs) in the 10th round on Thursday night at the Roberto Duran Arena in Panama City, Panama. Mosley knocked Lopez own in the 2nd round with a big left hook, and then dropped him three more in the 10th to get a stoppage.

The telling blow in the 10th was a powerful left hook to the head that put Lopez down. Earlier in the round, Mosley was pounding the southpaw Lopez at will with shots. The fight was halted at 2:00 of the 9th.

Mosley was cut over his right eye in the 2nd round from a clash of heads. The two fighters would bang heads repeatedly in the fight.

Lopez landed some really nice shots in the fight in the 3rd and 4th rounds. His punching power was top notch for a fighter with a 23-6 record. His problem was he didn’t throw enough punches, and he just kept waiting around most of the fight and letting Mosley get his punches off.

Mosley frequently charged Lopez and landed lead left hooks to the head and body. Mosley’s accuracy and timing looked way off though, as he frequently missed with wild left hooks as he charged forward. That made him look uncoordinated slightly and terribly wild. I see that as an age thing because Mosley rarely missed with his shots earlier in his career.

Mosley’s punching power looked as good as ever. He was landing some beautiful shots in every round of the fight. It’s a credit to Lopez that he was able to take the kind of punishment that he took, because he was getting hit a lot.

Where Mosley didn’t look so great was on the defensive side. He was hit a lot by Lopez by silly shots that he wouldn’t have been hit with if he were younger. Mosley’s lack of defense would get him in trouble if he was in the ring with a young welterweight with power like Errol Spence, Shawn Porter or Keith Thurman.

Mosley’s lack of size kept him from steamrolling Lopez in this fight, as he didn’t have the size that you see with some of the heavier welterweights like Thurman. Mosley looked like a pumped up lightweight in the fight. Mosley really doesn’t belong at welterweight, even after all these years. If he were to fight at 135 or 140, his punching power would be much more formidable than it is at 147.

Mosley started his career out as a lightweight and was one of the best that boxing has ever seen before. He moved up in weight to the welterweight division in order to chase bigger paydays against guys like Oscar De La Hoya and Fernando Vargas.

It’s unclear what Mosley’s end game is for his comeback. He says he wants rematches with Manny Pacquiao, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr, because he feels he’s improved since losing to all three of those fighters. However, Mosley doesn’t look like he’s improved at all judging by his performance tonight. But the real question is who will he fight in his comeback? Those stars aren’t going to waste time fighting Mosley again. Mosley isn’t interested in fighting the young contenders like Errol Spence.

Other boxing results on the card:

Jezreel Corrales TKO 11 Juan Rodriguez
