Chisora: Tyson Fury is the best heavyweight in boxing

fury1000By Scott Gilfoid: Former world title challenger Dereck Chisora (24-5, 16 KOs) says he sees IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) as now the best heavyweight in the division after Fury’s recent win over 39-year-old Wladimir Klitschko last month. Fury defeated Wladimir by a 12 round unanimous decision last November in Dusseldorf, Germany.

When asked by skysports.com who the best heavyweight in the world is right now, Chisora said “In the world at the moment is Tyson Fury.”

Next, Sky Sports asked Chisora if he saw WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder as potentially the best heavyweight in the world right now. Chisora said, “He’s okay, Deontay Wilder, but Tyson Fury is the best.”

Personally, I can’t think of a worse choice for the No.1 heavyweight in the planet right now than Tyson Fury. I’m sorry but I don’t rate Fury at all other than him being in the right place at the right time to get a shot against the faded Wladimir Klitshko. If the heavyweight division thinned out to where three-fourths of the top 15 retired, you could maybe make an argument in favor of Fury being the best heavyweight on the planet. Definitely not now though.

You cannot really blame the 31-year-old Chisora for saying that he thinks Fury is the best guys in the heavyweight division because he was beaten soundly by Fury twice. I guess if Fury did not beat Chisora, he would be saying that David Haye is the best heavyweight, because Haye knocked out Chisora in five rounds three years ago in 2012.

Being battered by someone has a way of making you think that they are the best fighter on the planet. It would be interesting to know how Chisora would feel if he faced Deontay Wilder and were KO’d by him in one or two rounds. Would Chisora claim that Wilder is the best heavyweight in the world when asked by Sky? My guess probably yes. Chisora can only speak about things that he knows about.

Since Chisora never fought Deontay in the past to find out how talented he is, he cannot come right now and say he is the best heavyweight in the world because he has never gotten in the ring with him to find out for sure.

In an ideal world, Fury would man up and face Wilder in a unification fight so that we could find out who the best fighter is in the heavyweight division, but right now it’s still debatable whether Fury will ever elect to share the ring with Deontay. I mean, Fury has a rematch against Wladimir Klitschko that he needs to take care of in early 2016, and it is unclear whether he will win that fight against the Ukrainian.

Fury was fighting with his foot to the floor against Wladimir last month in winning a narrow decision. I do not think Fury can improve at all over that performance in the rematch. However, I do think Wladimir can improve in a huge way by throwing more punches and focusing more on being offensive-minded.

Wladimir can do much better in the rematch to regain his world titles. It’s in Wilder’s best interests though if Fury beats Wladimir, because it could potentially put the two of them on crash course for a unification fight unless Fury chooses to defend his titles against his mandatory or voluntary challengers. I do think that Deontay appears to be the best heavyweight in the planet right now. He is looking so magnificent now in his fights.

I just cannot see anyone in the division having enough talent to beat him right now. I certainly do not see Fury being near good enough to beat Wilder. I think that would be an easy fight for Deontay. I think he walks right through Fury without any problems by cutting off the ring and poleaxing him with a single right hand to the head to get a stoppage win. The constant running that Fury did against Wladimir would not be effective against Wilder, because he would cut the ring off and take him out with a few well-placed right hands to the head.

I think Fury is a long ways away from being the best heavyweight in the division. I cannot say Deontay is the No.1 guy, because he still has not beaten enough guys to claim the right to be called the best. You would have to say that the best heavyweight still is unknown for the time being until all the top dogs face each other and filter out the pretenders to the throne. I think Wladimir stopped being the best a long time ago when he started milking his titles against guys like Jean Marc Mormeck. Wladimir hasn’t faced anyone really good for ages since his loss to Corrie Sanders 12 years ago in 2003.
