By Allan Fox: 36-year-old former WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (29-1, 21 KOs) weighed in today for his title defense of his WBC Silver belt against Poland’s Marciusz Wach (31-1, 17 KOs) on Wednesday night at the Basket-Hall Arena, in Kazan, Russia.

Povetkin weighed in at 227.7 pounds, but he’ll find himself outweighed by 28 pounds when he gets inside the ring tomorrow night against the 6’7 ½” Wach, who weighed in at 255.7lbs. Povetkin has found himself facing much heavier fighters in the past in wins over the likes of Hasim Rahman, David Bostice, Patrice L’Heureux and Nicolai Firtha.

Wach isn’t much of a threat to Povetkin, so it’s not a big deal that he’s giving up so much weight for this fight.

Povetkin needs a win in this fight to advance him to a title shot against WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder for next year. Povetkin believes he’ll beat Wilder without any problems, and then move on to face Wladimir Klitschko in a rematch.

Povetkin lost to Wladimir two years ago in Moscow, Russia. Povetkin has quickly won three fights since then in beating Manuel Charr, Carlos Takam and Mike Perez. Wach is a slight step down from Perez and Takam.

Povetkin is about to enter into what could be the toughest back to back fights of his career if he can get past Wach tomorrow night. Povetkin will need to beat the 6’7” Wilder, who is younger, faster, taller and stronger than him.

If Povetkin can beat Wilder, then the next step will be for him to fight the winner of the Klitschko vs. Tyson Fury card in unification match. Wladimir wants a crack at the WBC title, and he’ll fight anyone who holds the belt.

Fury will go after the WBC belt if he can get past Klitschko because he wants to unify all the titles, and he feels that he matches up well against the much shorter 6’2” Povetkin. It’s a fight that Fury wouldn’t be worried at all about winning.

If Wach knew how to use his tremendous size to his advantage then he would have Povetkin at his mercy, but unfortunately for him, he doesn’t know how to use his size.

Wach lost to Wladimir by a 12 round decision in 2012. He’s won his last four fights since then.

WBA cruiserweight champion Denis Lebedev (27-2, 20 KOs) weighed in for his title defense against unbeaten #3 WBA Lateef Kayode (21-0, 16 KOs). Lebedev weighed in at 198.8lbs. The 32-year-old Layode weighed in at 199.5lbs. Lebedev, 36, has won his last two fights since losing to Guillermo Jones by an 11th round knockout two years ago in May 2013. Lebedev has beaten Pawel Kolodziej and Youri Kayembre Kalenga.

Kayode is coming off of a 10 round unanimous decision over Nick Kisner last May. In Kayode’s fight before that, he was beaten by the much bigger Luis Ortiz by a 1st round knockout in September of last year. The loss was overturned, however, after Ortiz tested positive for a banned substance.

This is a bad match-up for Kayode because he seems to have problems taking hard shots, and the southpaw Lebedev has huge power.

Other weights for the card:

Cesar Cuenca 139.3 vs. Edward Trojanowski 139.1
Rakhim Chakhkiev 198 vs. Ola Afolabi 198.2
Dmitry Kudryashov 199.7 vs. Olanrewaju Durodola 198.6
Junior Jackson 173.3 vs. Dmitry Bivol 173.7
