cotto11By Dan Ambrose: At Friday’s weigh-in, a slightly weight drained Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) weighed in at 155lbs on the dot for his catch-weight fight at 155 pounds for non-title fight against Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) for their fight on Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

For his part, Cotto weighed in slightly less at 153.5lbs. With the way that Cotto looked, it’s doubtful that he’ll gain a lot of weight overnight when he rehydrates for their fight on HBO PPV.

Cotto looked like he was ready to step inside the ring and fight. With Canelo, he had the look of someone who will likely put on another 17 to 20 pounds before he faces Cotto tomorrow night. My guess is we’ll see Canelo coming into the ring from 172 to 175 pound on Saturday.

“Rest, rehydrate myself, and get ready for tomorrow,” Cotto said after the weigh-in when asked what he’ll be doing before tomorrow’s fight. “Freddie makes me a better fighter. We’re here to win the fight. No matter what we have to do. We’re going to win the fight.”

“The fans motivate me very much, and I’m going to pay them back with a win on Saturday night,” Canelo said. “I have a tough task in front of myself.”

Depending on how well Canelo can deal with putting back on a ton of weight overnight, it could be an interesting fight. I have a feeling though that Canelo will wind up gassing out badly if Cotto pushes a fast pace and makes him move around the ring a lot. Canelo didn’t look good in his fight against Erislandy Lara last year in July 2014. That was the last time that Canelo went 12 rounds. He appeared to lose the fight, but was given a controversial 12 round decision. In Canelo’s last fight in May, his promoter Oscar De La Hoya dug up an inactive and no longer relevant fighter in James Kirkland for him to fight. Canelo was able to beat Kirkland by a 3rd round knockout. To get ready for the fight, Kirkland reportedly had to drop a lot of weight to make the 155lb limit. This was the same thing for Canelo’s opponent Alfredo Angulo in March of last year. You can make an argument that Canelo has faced only one opponent since his loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013. Lara is the only quality opponent that Canelo has fought since his loss to Mayweather, and Canelo looked terrible against Lara.
