Vitali Klitschko shocked by Wladimir’s loss to Fury

vitali3By Tim Fletcher: Former heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko says his brother former IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko rates a rematch with Tyson Fury after his loss to him last Saturday night. However, Vitali it’s ultimately up to Wladimir whether he wants to step inside the ring with Fury a second time or not. Vitali says he was shocked at how Wladimir was beaten by Fury.

Wladimir is saying he would like to take a second fight with the 6’9” Fury. Vitali tried his best to encourage Wladimir in between rounds during the Fury fight. Wladimir was unable to get himself to do what his brother was telling him to do.

Wladimir’s trainer Johnathon Banks told Wladimir that he needed to let his hands go, but failed to do what he was being told.

“I’m shocked because I know how good Wladimir is,” Vitali said after the fight.”Wladimir didn’t show his performance tonight. That’s why Tyson Fury is the champion tonight.

Wladimir might be better off sitting down and thinking it over rather than making a quick decision on something as important as a second fight with the British heavyweight. Wladimir looked his age last Saturday night in losing a 12 round unanimous decision.

It wasn’t anything special that Fury was doing to make Wladimir look old. He looked very similar to how he performed in his previous fight against Bryant Jennings last April at Madison Square Garden in New York. Wladimir couldn’t trigger on his punches in that fight as well, and he only won the fight because he was bailed out by his jabs, clinching and movement. Last night, Wladimir looked like he couldn’t even jab. He was just out there without any offense at all hoping to somehow get a decision.

“Wladimir deserves a rematch,” Vitali said. “It is up to him to decide what he wants to do. He has to analyze things, but he will come back stronger after this defeat. He always does.”

Wladimir has already said that he’ll take the rematch with Fury. I think it was humiliating experience for him to lose the way he did. By now, Wladimir has seen how bad he looked and that’s probably more salt in his wounds. If Wladimir watched the replay of his performance on HBO, he’ll see that he was being criticized constantly the entire fight and rightfully so.

It must have been a real surprise to Vitali to see Wladimir lose to a fighter that he felt was very beatable in the 6’9” Fury. Vitali seemed to think it was a cut and dried thing for Wladimir to beat Fury. However, Vitali didn’t figure on how Wladimir would be confused by the movement of Fury.

Also the size that Fury had seemed to cause Wladimir to think twice about throwing his punches, because each time he would attempt to land anything, he was hit by at least one of Fury’s punches. Wladimir has never been the type of heavyweight that believed in taking shots in order to deliver his own. If he was that type of heavyweight then he would have had an excellent chance of knocking Fury out last Saturday night. Fury was there to be beaten if Wladimir had put his foot on the accelerator and went after him with a concerted effort.

There would be no shame in Wladimir retiring now and saving himself another loss to Fury. Unless Wladimir needs the payday, he should go in another direction by either retiring or looking for a smaller heavyweight that he’s more comfortable with. Wladimir was very uncomfortable with the 6’9” Fury’s long reach and height. Fury was able to paralyze Wladimir just by his size alone.

What made things even more tilted in Fury’s favor was his frequent shots that was throwing Wladimir’s way. Fury looked like he was mainly throwing punches just to keep Wladimir from throwing his own. Fury’s flicking shots didn’t seem to be designed to land. It was more of a case of them just to ward Wladimir off by having shotgun like punches flicked in the air over and over again to scare the aging champion off. It worked perfectly, as Wladimir kept waiting and waiting for Fury to stop throwing shots, and he just never really did.

Unless Wladimir gets comfortable with fighting that style of opponent during his next training camp, he should think twice about facing Fury again. The outcome might even be worse for Wladimir the second time around if he doesn’t understand how to defeat what Fury is doing in the ring.
