Should Klitschko take a direct rematch against Fury?

wladimir455333By Gerardo Granados: It was an interesting post fight press conference for the aftermath of Tyson Fury’s 12 round unanimous decision win over IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-4, 53 KOs) at the ESPRIT Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany. The Klitschko Team showed class as well as the Fury Team.

Trainer Peter Fury perfectly explained why Tyson so successful against Wladimir tonight. Vitali Klitschlko, the brother of Wladimir, made an interesting remark on how his Wladimir wasn’t able to perform as they had expected. Also a rematch clause was mentioned and was confirmed it is in the contract, but is it a good idea to take a direct rematch?

I saw Fury win the fight so wide that I thought I was being bias towards him, for me Tyson edged Wladimir on Defense – Ring Generalship – Clean and hard punching – Effective Aggression thru at least 10 rounds. He literally out boxed Klitschko and made him look like one dimensional fighter.

I wonder about Klitschko state of mind after losing in that way more than have seen him a bit out of breath in the mid rounds. I think physically he was fit but the lousy game plan got him tired early on the fight. He looked hesitant to attack and on times frustrated so his level of confidence for a direct rematch is an important issue for me.

Fury did what he does best and Wladimir did what he usually does against smaller foes and was unable to adjust when the original game plan failed.

I didn’t hear any good advice on Klitschko corner but Fury got good advice on his own, Tyson set the tempo, distance, had way better footwork, head upper body movement, faints, countered, made Klitschko hesitant to throw his right or allow him to cut off the ring properly.

One thing I noticed is that Wladimir kept on clinching when he should have tried to work on the inside and punish the body more often. He got so used to negate smaller foes by clinching or leaning on them that it was like he forgot he was the smaller foe against Fury and also once inside pushed off Tyson wasting the opportunity to stay at close or mid range to throw uppercuts or hooks.

Wladimir’s late trainer Emanuel Steward engineered a great boxing style for Wladimir that work beautifully versus smaller foes, but if the first time against Tyson, Wladimir’s current trainer Johnathon Banks, was not able to design a proper game plan to fight against Fury it makes me wonder if he will be able to make significant changes to go to a direct rematch.

You cannot rely solely on size to beat opponents, you must develop boxing skills and get ready for different boxing styles and WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder can’t represent a real danger for Wladimir, who I see as a legit top 5 contender who can still beat most of the top heavies.

Whether Wladimir take a direct rematch is up to him only. In my personal opinion, instead of a direct rematch with Fury, he should rebuild his confidence first and try a new strategy to prepare for the rematch against a belt holder who in theory doesn’t represent a big danger because he isn’t in the same level as Fury.

I am sure Klitschko can easily beat Wilder, and after that face Fury in a rematch at the Wembley Stadium to unify all the belts at the heavyweight division in a fight that could break many records.

But this is my opinion. What about the readers? Do you think Wladimir should take a direct rematch against the new Heavyweight Champion of the World Fury?
