Mayweather must fight Golovkin if he wants to be TBE

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Allan Fox: We recently heard Floyd Mayweather Jr. recently say that he would have fought Gennady Golovkin if he could make 160lbs. It would sound like a reasonable excuse for Mayweather if the fact that Golovkin is smaller than Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, a fighter that Mayweather was more than willing to fight in 2013.

Canelo is bigger than Golovkin, and will always be bigger than him even though Golovkin is willing to fight in a higher weigh class at middleweight against guys that outweigh him. You can make an argument that Golovkin is really little more than a junior middleweight who chooses to fight in the middleweight division against heavier fighters than himself.

“Mayweather is a different beast. Mayweather could win the fight by making Triple G miss,” said ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith on First Take. “The guy [Golovkin] is too big, too strong, and more importantly, he [Mayweather] has absolutely nothing to gain. You stay away from a dude like this. If he’s in your division, then that’s somebody you’re supposed to fight. He is two weight divisions above Mayweather, and he’s a knockout artist. He’s too big for Mayweather. I would get on Mayweather for not running from this guy. Don’t go near him,” Smith said.

I think Mayweather has no excuse for not fighting Golovkin. If Mayweather was willing to fight Canelo and Miguel Cotto, then he should be willing to fight Golovkin, because he’s lighter than Canelo, and not that much heavier than Cotto. Boxing greats like Sugar Ray Leonard and Sugar Ray Robinson were willing to fight guys that were slightly better than them, so Mayweather should be willing to do that too. If he wants to be remembered as the best, then he has to come back and fight Golovkin because that name is standing out waiting for Mayweather to come back and fight him.

If Mayweather comes back and chooses to fight another soft touch like an Andre Berto type opponent, then he’s going to be hurting his legacy even more than he did with his last two fights against and Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather could have ended his career with a bang by fighting Golovkin, but he instead chose to go out with a whimper. That’s what Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya said and I agree with him.

Golovkin deserves a fight against Mayweather because he’s worked hard in beating everyone that’s been put in front of him. Canelo, Cotto and Pacquiao all had their chances to fight Mayweather and they all lost. Now it should be Golovkin’s turn to fight him, and you can’t say that he’s too big for him if he’s actually lighter than Canelo.

If Mayweather wants to remember as the best of all time, then it’s imperative that he fight Golovkin and prove that he’s better than him. If he’s not better than him, then he needs to take his beating like a man and lose his unbeaten record. I don’t think Mayweather can be remembered as the best though, because he’s not been willing to take the dangerous fights. Mayweather waited until Pacquiao was old and feeble until he fought him. Mayweather fought Cotto and Canelo before they hit their prime.
