Mayweather comments on Ronda Rousey’s loss – “You win some you lose some”

1-009_Floyd_MayweatherBy Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. refused to gloat over former UFC Women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey’s 2nd round knockout loss last Saturday night to former female boxing star Holly Holm in UFC 193 in Melbourne, Australia.

Mayweather could have gone after the 28-year-old Rousey by giving the old ‘I told you so’ line after Rousey had previously said that she could beat Mayweather in an anything goes type of fight, but Mayweather held off and showed mercy to the exposed Rousey in her moment of weakness.

“Just in boxing period, contact sports period, you win some, you lose some,” Mayweather said via Mlive.com. “I don’t know about this fight, I just know that you win some and you lose some. It basically comes with the territory.”

Mayweather recently annoyed at seeing Rousey’s picture put on the cover of Ring Magazine, a boxing magazine. Mayweather said it made boxing “look bad” having Rousey on the cover of the magazine. Oscar De La Hoya, the owner of the magazine, said that Rousey was put on the cover of Ring Magazine because she’s learning about the sport of boxing, and that she might someday switch sports to try and become a boxing champion. De La Hoya then said he would be there to try and add her to his promotional stable when/if that happened. However, after the way that Rousey looked in losing to Holm last Saturday night in just 2 rounds, I think De La Hoya would be good to take a pass on signing Rousey to Golden Boy Promotions if the opportunity presents itself to him.

Rousey has too much to learn about boxing, and she’s too much of a short, plump round body to do well against the taller fighters with long arms like Holm in my view. Rousey would also give away height and reach against women like Holm if she switched to boxing, and I don’t think she would do well.

I guess with this loss, Rousey can no longer say she would beat Mayweather in an anything goes type of fight. Rousey was picked as the favorite to defeat Holm just as she was the favorite before he other fights. The oddsmakers assumed that Rousey would flip Holm onto the mat and then either pound her into submission or put her into a submission hold like she’d done against her previous opposition. But Holm quickly showed in the fight that she was the better stand up fighter, and good enough on the mat to keep from being forced to submit with Rousey’s favorite arm bar move.

Holm hurt Rousey with a left hand to the head in the 2nd round, and then she knocked her down with a left kick to the jaw. Rousey was out cold when Holm hit her with two more shots to the head while she was on her back on the mat. It was just too easy for Holm, as Rousey looked like an unskilled amateur fighter going against a pro. It just showed the difference between boxing and MMA in terms of the stand-up fighting.

Rousey had been crowned by many as the best female athlete in sports for her series of 1st round stoppage wins in UFC competition in the MMA sport. However, there were many fans out there who felt that she was facing incredibly poor opposition in building up her unbeaten resume thanks to the clever match-making that had been done for her. There were people out there who wondered by Rousey wouldn’t accept a fight with “Cyborg,” another female MMA fighter, but one cut from a different cloth from the poor opposition that Rousey had built her resume on.

Finally, when Rousey had to face a quality fighter in Holly Holm, she fell apart completely in getting pummeled and knocked clean out by the former boxing star. With the way that Holm beat Rousey, it was clear from the very start of the fight that Rousey was not even in the same stratosphere as her in terms of talent. It was one of those beat downs that suggests that Holm would always be able to beat Rousey no matter how many times they were matched up.

Rousey had issues with Mayweather a year ago after he was asked about her by a sports writer and he said he didn’t know who she was. This angered Rousey, and she waited a year to take a shot at Mayweather verbally at the ESPYs in 2015.
