Maidana hasn’t made decision about career yet

maidana8By Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Marcos Maidana (35-5, 31 KO) says he still hasn’t made a decision about his career. He’s been out of the since September of 2014 after losing a second fight to Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Maidana has put on a lot of weight since his second fight against Mayweather, and it’s unclear when/if Maidana will be returning to the ring to continue his career. His trainer Robert Garcia has talked recently of Maidana returning to the ring at some point, but his latest interview gives the appearance that Maidana isn’t sure whether he’ll continue fighting or not.

He’s made a lot of money from his two Mayweather fights, so it’s not as if he needs to continue fighting.

“In boxing I think I turned my cycle. I feel very well and I think of boxing,” Maidana said to Deportemas of Radio Palermo radio program. “All this time off helped me a lot. I still have not made a decision but I think I did everything I could in boxing.”

Maidana isn’t old at 32-years-old, but he’s already been out of the ring for over a year, and he likely won’t be back inside the ring until sometime next year if he decides to continue his pro career.

The more time that Maidana stays out of the ring the more difficult it’ll be for him when he does come back. Unless his promoter can get him a big fight, he’s going to have to take a considerable pay cut from the money that he made in the previous fights with Mayweather.

“I had good fights and the past and have very good results,” Maidana said. “Fighting twice with Floyd Mayweather and made good difference in getting bags of money. I am calm,” Maidana said.

The money that Maidana made in the ring will let him live the rest of his life in comfort in his native Argentina. That’s obviously something that makes it tougher for him to come back. He’s already got a lot of money, and getting motivated isn’t going to be easy.

If Maidana does come back, he can either take a tune-up fight or look to get a title shot against the likes of WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman or IBF 147lb champion Kell Brook. But with all the time that Maidana has been out of the ring, it would be better for him if he were to take a tune-up or two before he got back into the thick of things if he wants to do well. You can’t expect Maidana to be at his best with him coming off of a year and a half layoff the ring and having lost a lot of weight.

In some of the videos of Maidana in 2015, he looks to be over 200 pounds. It’s unclear how much weight Maidana has taken off if any in the last four months. Losing all that weight is going to be tough on Maidana, because it could leave him weight drained. There’s talk that he might choose to try and fight at 154 because it would make it easier for him to make that weight.
