Koncz: Pacquiao won’t wait on Mayweather to make decision

Mayweather and PacquiaoBy Chris Williams: Adviser/helper Michael Koncz says that Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao won’t wait on Floyd Mayweather Jr. to make a decision whether he’s going to come out of retirement or not to face them in a rematch in early 2016.

Koncz says he’ll be speaking with Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) this week for them to speak on who his next opponent will be in April 2016. Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum has personally collected three names – Terence Crawford, Tim Bradley and Amir Khan – for Pacquiao to make a decision on for the fight.

However, there are other names that have been mentioned besides Arum’s small list, names like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Danny Garcia. If Pacquiao selects one of Arum’s gang of three to fight for his final fight, it’ll likely result in Pacquiao losing millions of dollars compared to the big money he could make if he were to fight the likes of Canelo.

That’s not a knock on Crawford, Khan and Bradley. They’re good little fighters, but they don’t bring in the cash like Canelo. If Pacquiao really is going to be fighting just one more time, then he should try and get as much money as possible for that fight rather than selecting one of the three fighters that Arum has dug up.

“We haven’t had the chance to talk about it but he promised me that we’ll discuss it this week,” said Koncz to mb.com.ph.

In talking kind of tough about Mayweather, Koncz said “we won’t wait for him to make a decision” about him coming out of retirement.

I don’t think Pacquiao has much choice but to wait around for Mayweather, because Arum’s gangs of 3 aren’t big names. Those are all Brandon Rios type names, and Pacquiao will be lucky if he can even bring in 400,000 pay-per-view buys with those guys.

If Arum wants someone to fight one of those guys, then he should have Bradley and Crawford fight each other or have one of them fight Khan. I don’t think Khan will go for that idea though because there’s no money for Khan in a fight against Crawford or Bradley.

Khan obviously knows that. Those fights would be the equivalent of Khan fighting Chris Algieri, Devon Alexander or Luis Collazo again. Bradley and Crawford are clearly better fighters than those guys, but they’re not any more popular than them with the casual boxing fans.

If Pacquiao and Koncz were on the ball, they’d tell Arum to get either Mayweather or Canelo. They’d tell Arum to lose the Crawford, Khan and Bradley names.

We haven’t heard much about Pacquiao’s surgically repaired right shoulder lately. I don’t if it’s healing or if it’s the same as it was. I guess it doesn’t matter though. Pacquiao will probably fight even if his shoulder isn’t what it once was. I know some fighters with Pacquiao’s type of injuries don’t come back as the same fighter they once were following surgery. With this being Pacquiao’s last fight of his career, I don’t think it really matters if his shoulder isn’t the same as it once was. Pacquiao will fight and then retire.
