Khan wants to fight in the Olympics again

khan333By Scott Gilfoid: The soon to be 29-year-old Amir Khan says he’d like to take part in the Olympics again. The AIBA is considering whether to allow professional fighters like Khan to fight in the Olympics, and Khan is really up for it after coming short of the gold medal in the 2004 Olympics for Britain.

Khan won a silver medal at the age of 17. The AIBA is about to change the rules so that professional fighters can participate. However, the rule change will need to take place by next year for Khan to have a chance, because it’s doubtful that he’ll want to wait four more years until 2020 to try and participate. He’d be 33 by then, and that would be kind of pushing it.

“The AIBA wants professional boxers to work with the AIBA and they will allow them to go to the Olympics,” Khan said via the timesofindia.indiatimes.com. “So imagine, I may have a second chance at the Olympics. That will be amazing because everybody wants to go to the Olympics.”

Looking at it from another angle, it might be kind of a selfish thing on Khan’s part to try and fight in the Olympics again, because he’s already taken part in the Olympics once. He should let some of the younger kids from the UK try and get a spot on the team so that they can have their turn. With a well-known fighter like Khan trying out for the Olympics, there could be some controversy involved if Khan gets a place over another fighter.

The scoring for the fights are almost impossible to understand. Many of the amateur bouts are controversial because of the way the sport is scored. You frequently get fighters that appeared to lose the fights given gold medals, and it leaves a bad taste in the fan’s mouth every time.

British heavyweight Anthony Joshua won a controversial gold medal in the 2012 London Olympics, and many boxing fans thought that Joshua was beaten twice in the Olympics in fights against Roberto Cammarelle and Erislandy Savon. I had Joshua losing all four of his fights.

I don’t know why Khan would want to bother with the Olympics again, because he still hasn’t made it big as a pro. His career is very incomplete at this point, and it would seem to me that Khan should have bigger fish to fry than taking his career backwards.

It would be like going back to the 6th grade so that you could do better the second time around.

Khan is trying to get a fight against Manny Pacquiao in early 2016 in what would be the Filipino’s final fight of his career. Khan says the negotiations are moving along well. Whether that’s true or not is the big question.

“Talks are going really well,” Khan said. “They [Pacquiao’s management] are speaking to my team, I have just left it to my team. I fight anybody who is brought in front of me. If it’s Manny Pacquiao, it’s Manny Pacquiao. If not, then somebody else. We are still waiting for response on what’s going to happen.”
