Khan still bellyaching about Mayweather

khan44By Scott Gilfoid: Instead of getting over the reality that he just wasn’t considered a desirable opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs) for one of his last four fights of his career, Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) is still crying about how Mayweather Jr. ignored him and fought other opposition.

Khan believes that Mayweather chose to fight Manny Pacquiao, Marcos Maidana and Andre Berto because he was afraid of mixing it up with him. Khan thinks that he would have knocked Mayweather out if he had given him a chance for a fight. Mayweather wasn’t going to give Khan that chance, but for different reasons.

I believe Mayweather chose not to fight Khan because he didn’t want to have to chase him around the ring all night, and deal with his head-locks and clinching all night. At 38, Mayweather obviously wanted to make sure he looked good in his last four fights, and didn’t have to deal with someone who was just looking to spoil 24/7 like Khan. I mean, Khan doesn’t spoil as much as he used to thanks to trainer Virgil Hunter, but he still is an ugly spoiler and Mayweather must have been turned off by the thought of fighting someone like that.

Besides Khan’s less than appealing fighting style that likely causes Mayweather to ignore him, Khan also wasn’t a big enough draw for Mayweather to want to fight him. If Khan had a huge fan base in the U.S like Pacquiao, then Mayweather probably would have agreed to fight him ages ago.

“He [Mayweather] was scared of me, wasn’t he? We were this close to finalizing the fight. But his team backed out at the last moment. They knew that I would beat him,” Khan said to Rediff.com.

I hope Khan can sleep at night better by him thinking that Mayweather was terrified of fighting him, because that’s dream stuff that he’s come up with. Now all Khan needs to do is come up with the same idea for when superstar Manny Pacquiao decides not to fight Khan as well for his final fight of his career on April 9th next year.

If Khan was smart, he’d already have a good backup plan in place for someone to fight when Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum announces that they’ll be fighting someone else rather than Khan for next April.

Instead of Khan blabbering about the fish that got away, he should be looking to man up and finally face IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook. That’s a fight that would give Khan a payday of $5 million at the minimum, according to Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn.

Khan needs to take the Brook fight while he can still get a decent cut of the financial pie in the UK. If Khan gets whipped again by someone, you can bet that the cut of the revenue for a fight against Brook will drop off to the point where Brook will be the one getting the larger cut of the pie. Right now, I think it’s still a 50-50 cut for Khan. If he waits until he gets beaten, then I see that cut dropping to 60-40 or 70-30.

“It was so disappointing. I could have knocked him out. It was such a shame that I didn’t get the opportunity,” Khan said.

The problem that Khan has is he doesn’t seem to be able to connect the dots for why he’s not able to get the bigger money fights against stars like Mayweather and Pacquiao. The reason why he’s not getting those fights is because Khan’s career pretty much stopped progressing after his back to back losses to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia. Since then, Khan backed off from taking on dangerous opposition completely for some reason.

Before the defeats to those guys, Khan was still taking risks with his career. All that stopped after he was whipped by Peterson and Garcia. Khan has faced weak punchers ever since in facing Carlos Molina, Julio Diaz, Luis Collazo, Devon Alexander and Chris Algieri. Those are all weak punchers. Khan should have been fighting guys like Brook, Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia [again], Peterson [again], Keith Thurman and Errol Spence. If Khan had been facing those guys and beating them, then he’d have made a case that he’s up there with Pacquiao and Mayweather as being one of the top three welterweights in the division.
