Is De La Hoya avoiding Canelo vs. GGG clash?

de la hoya84By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: This is the beauty about boxing. It’s unpredictable. And sometimes my theories on things are wrong, but I enjoy attempting so here we go. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez win over Miguel Cotto for the WBC middleweight title was big, but it also put Canelo in direct line to face mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin (GGG, aka Trip).

So far Oscar De La Hoya has been mum on his next move. However, his moves could be decided for him by the WBC if he doesn’t make up his mind. Canelo has 15 days to decide to fight Trip or be stripped of his title. My spidey senses tell me Oscar is trying to maneuver around that mandatory bout. Enter Floyd Mayweather.

De La Hoya wrote a letter printed in Playboy magazine tearing down Mayweather in all ways possible. Just some time ago, he had a change of heart and called for a truce and has been calling for a rematch between Canelo and Floyd. Why now though? And Why Floyd Mayweather Jr? Why isn’t he reaching out to any other promoter? Why isn’t he reaching out to his good ole friend and Top Rank promoter Bob Arum?

De La Hoya knows that no one else outside of Floyd can help Canelo by pass the clash with GGG. He also understands Floyd’s position as emeritus champion; meaning that if Floyd wanted to challenge for the WBC belt he wouldn’t have to stand in line to get a title shot.

If the fight did go down, it would more than likely take place at a catch weight of 155. This way Oscar can by some time until he figures out his next move. There was talk of Canelo facing WBO 147 Champ Tim Bradley, but it didn’t get far. Me and a couple of my boxing buddies predicted that Oscar would feed former IBF champ David Lemieux (Lemmy) to Trip as a test run for a future fight with Canelo. However, things didn’t go as planned. Had Lemieux won, Oscar would definitely arranged a Canelo against Lemmy in a unification bout; seeing how Canelo got passed Cotto. None of that happened. The WBC will be monitored by the boxing public to see how they will handle the situation Canelo/Trip situation. If Oscar can’t decide what to do then the WBC “should” decide for him.
