Golovkin: Canelo lost too much weight, not good

1-Alvarez-Cotto (1)By Dan Ambrose: Like a lot of people who saw Friday’s weigh-in, IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin thinks Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) took too much weight off to get down to the 155lb catch-weight for his fight tonight against Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) on HBO PPV from the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Canelo looked painfully thin in coming in at 155lbs for the catch-weight, and had the look of someone who had to cut a lot of weight to make the limit. Considering that Canelo tends to rehydrate into the mid-170s, he possibly lost as much as 20 pounds. Cotto looked great, like he was ready to step inside the ring and fight hard for 12 rounds. You could tell that Cotto wasn’t going to regain much weight after he rehydrates because he looked pretty much like he always does for his fights.

That’s obviously not healthy for a person’s body. Golovkin thinks that Canelo does not look good with the amount of weight he took off to make the 155lb catch-weight limit.

“Miguel is with Freddie [Roach] now so it is a big test, not like [Daniel] Geale, but a true test,” Golovkin said via Fightnews.com. “I saw Miguel, he looks good. I saw Canelo, I think he lost a lot of weight, too much, not good. For me, [the fight] it’s 50/50.”

Canelo will obviously be completely rehydrated by the time he gets inside the ring tonight with Cotto, but he could be hurt by the process if the fight goes past the 4th round. For fighters that rehydrate the amount of weight that Canelo does, they tend to gas out in the second half of their fights. That might explain why Canelo struggled in his fights against Erislandy Lara, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and Austin Trout when he was forced to go the full 12 round distance.

If Cotto can push a fast pace on Canelo tonight, he could wear down Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya’s red rooster and possibly get a knockout.

Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach believes it’s possible for Cotto to get a knockout over Canelo tonight. He thinks that Canelo leaves himself open for big shots and is easy to nail.
If Canelo runs out of gas tonight, it’s going to make Cotto’s job really easy.

Cotto’s last opponent Daniel Geale rehydrated to 183 pounds after making weight at 157lbs for their catch-weight fight last June. But all that weight that Geale gained back seemed to slow him down, making him vulnerable for Cotto’s hard shots when the fight went past the 3rd round.

A loss for Canelo might be the best thing for him. It would be a wakeup call that it’s finally time for him to move up to the full weight for the middleweight division at 160lbs so that he doesn’t have to put his body through such hardship by losing 20 pounds the week of the fight and then putting it back on within 24 hours of his fights.

For fighters that do what Canelo does, it’s something that they usually can only get away with for a limited amount of time before it eventually catches up to them. Will it catch up to Canelo tonight with him running out of gas after 4 rounds and either getting stopped by Cotto or taking a beating?
