Floyd Sr: I might tell Mayweather to fight Cotto-Canelo winner

1-cotto-vs-alvarez (11)By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. says he’ll be watching this Saturday’s fight between Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and he’ll be making a decision based on what he sees whether his son Floyd Mayweather Jr. should come out of retirement or not to face the winner of that fight.

Floyd Sr. already believes that Mayweather Jr. can beat Cotto and Canelo right now, but he wants to see them fight before he makes a decision whether to encourage Mayweather to take the winner or not.

“My son’s a way better fighter [than Cotto]. I’m pretty sure [Floyd Jr.] could take the winner, but I’m going to look at it myself and touch base with what I see, and I know what Floyd can do,” Floyd Sr. said via the latimes.com. “I’m going to look at it real good and make sure nothing gets past me. I might say ‘Let’s go do this.’”

It likely will come down to whether Mayweather feels like he’ll be doing anything for his legacy in coming back to take on one of these guys, because he’s already beaten Cotto and Canelo in the past. It’s not as if he’s going to be opening up new ground by facing someone he’s already beaten before. Further, if Mayweather takes on the 175lb Canelo rather than the 170lb Gennady Golovkin, then Mayweather is going to look like a cherry picker, because he recently said that he didn’t want to face Golovkin because he’s a 160lb fighter.

Canelo is clearly a 160lb fighter whether Mayweather wants to admit it or not, so he would look bad if he chooses to fight Canelo for a second time instead of someone that is unbeaten like Golovkin.

“I think Mayweather is going to fight again, I really so,” Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach said to the latimes.com. “I’m going to ask Miguel to say some things [if/when he beats Canelo on Saturday] he might not like to say, or I’m going to help him along.”

Roach went on to say that he’s going to tell Mayweather that it was like a thing of “luck” that he was able to beat Cotto three years ago in 2012 before Roach was his trainer.
