By Dan Ambrose In a beautiful display of power punching, undefeated knockout artist Errol Spence Jr. (19-0, 16 KOs) kept his unbeaten record intact with a 5th round knockout over the tough but limited Alejandro Barrera (28-2, 18 KOs) in welterweight action on Saturday on Premier Boxing Champions on NBC from The Bomb Factory in Dallas, Texas.

Spence landed crushing combination to the body for the knockout in the 5th. Barrera, 29, was too hurt to get up after the knockdown. Moments before, Spence Jr. had knocked Barrera down with a nice body shot after cornering him against the ropes.

“I’m in the top 10 in the IBF,” Spence said after the fight. “I want the big names. I want to fight Kell Brook, Shawn Porter or Keith Thurman.”

Barrera landed some nice shots occasionally in each round. However, Spence was frequently connecting with tremendous punches that seemed to rattle Barrera. Spence stunned Barrera with big power shots to the head in the 1st and 2nd rounds. Barrera was able to avoid getting taken out with his nonstop circling of the ring. This kept Spence from being able to trap him bludgeon him into submission like he’d done with his other opponents.

By the 4th round, Barrera was landing very few punches, as he was just looking to run and avoid getting hit by Spence’s huge shots. But the movement wasn’t helping Barrera because Spence was able to to cut off the ring on him to land some monstrous shots to the head. Spence seemed to figure out that the best way to get to Barrera was to throw to the body, because it was difficult to land head shots due to his circling of the ring. Once Spence decided to focus to the body, Barrera’s fate was sealed. He wasn’t able to avoid getting hit to the body no matter how much running he did around the ring. Spence was able to punch holes through his midsection each time he was able to cut off the ring on him.

The Spence Jr. vs. Barrera fight was an IBF eliminator for 147. However, there’s one more eliminator that Spence Jr. will need to get through for him to become the IBF mandatory challenger to face the winner of the Kell Brook vs. Kevin Bizier fight in 2016.

The way that Spence looked tonight, I think Brook would be in deep trouble with his punching power. The southpaw Spence has punching power from another world, and Brook hasn’t had to face anyone like that before during his career.
