Dereck Chisora no longer promoted by Queensberry Promotions

chisora66By Scott Gilfoid: According to a press release earlier today from Queensberry Promptions, former heavyweight world title challenger Dereck Chisora (22-5, 14 KOs) is no longer promoted by the company. It’s unclear what happened or if this was merely a situation where the 31-year-old Chisora’s promotional contract has run out with the promotional company.

Chisora did alright with them in getting a world title shot against former WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko in 2012, a fight against David Haye, Robert Helenius and two fights against Tyson Fury.

Those were five good fights in the past four years. Unfortunately, Chisora lost all five of those fights.

With Chisora now a promotional free agent, it’ll be interesting to see if Chisora gets scooped up by Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn to be added to his promotional company. Hearn has been like a giant vacuum cleaner with the way that he’s been able to sign many of the top British fighters recently. I’m not sure if he’d be interested in signing Chisora, who turns 32 in December.

Hearn wouldn’t be getting a spring chicken if he signed Chisora, and it might not be a good deal for him if Chisora is going to be having weight problems. If Hearn is mainly focused on signing guys with the potential to win world titles, then Chisora might be an especially bad choice for him because I can’t see him winning any world titles with what’s left of his career.

Chisora would struggle if he were fought IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, WBC champ Deontay Wilder and WBA “regular” champion Ruslan Chagaev. Chisora’s biggest problem, besides him not being able to match-up with the top champions, is him getting in position to fight for a world title. I mean, I seriously doubt that any of the world champions would ever select Chisora in a voluntary defense.

With the way that Chisora acted during the run up to his title shot against Vitali Klitschko, he might scare off the other champions from wanting to fight him. If Chisora has to work his way to a No.1 spot, he’d likely have to prove that he can beat the top contenders to get in that position, and I don’t think Chisora could beat guys like Alexander Povetkin, Luis Ortiz, Vyacheslav Glazkov, Lucas Browne and Anthony Joshua.

An out of shape 260lb Chisora recently had to struggle to defeat journeyman Marcelo Luiz Nascimento. Chisora looked absolutely horrible in that fight, and it’s strange that he would go into a fight as badly out of shape as he was. Chisora has won two fights since his 10th round stoppage loss to Fury in November 2014. In Chisora’s first fight since his loss to Fury, he defeated little known Beqa Lobjanidze.

“Queensberry Promotions will no longer be promoting or working with Dereck Chisora,” the press statement said.

Chisora needs to get back into the top 15 for him to the bigger fights. He can pretty much forget about a third fight against Fury, because I can’t see there being any interest in the boxing public in a third fight between the two guys. WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder isn’t going to waste time fighting a 2nd tier fighter like Chisora.
