DeGale: Froch is an old man and old news

degale777By Scott Gilfoid: Recently, former WBA/WBC 168lb champion Carl Froch came out of the woodwork to take some verbal shots at IBF super middleweight champion James DeGale (21-1, 14 KOs), saying that he might potentially be interested in coming out of retirement to take back his IBF title by beating DeGale if he can get past 35-year-old Lucian Bute (32-2, 25 KOs) in their fight this month on November 28th at the Centre Videotron in Quebec City, Quebec.

DeGale, 29, doesn’t advise the 38-year-old Froch to come out of retirement, because he sees him as an old man now who had his time in the sport, and it now just part of history. Froch said he would give DeGale a good “pasting” if he does decide to come back. However, Froch also says that his girlfriend would likely tell him not to come back to the sport.

“I think it’s just a bit of publicity for him saying he will come back and give me a pasting,” DeGale said via skysports.com. “Froch is old news, he’s an old man. If I was him, I would just stay retired and chill. He’s achieved a lot in boxing. He’s earned a lot of money… just sit back and relax.”

I honestly don’t know why Froch is even bothering mentioning DeGale’s name as someone he might be interested in facing in a comeback. I mean, it’s not as if DeGale has a huge fan base in the UK or worldwide. Froch is really setting a low bar by targeting DeGale rather than the fighter that the boxing world wants him to fight in Gennady Golovkin. But it’s also telling that Froch is focusing on wanting to fight DeGale rather than Golovkin, because it suggests that there might be some confidence issues with Froch.

If you feel that you have the confidence to achieve something, whether that is in athletics or in terms of your career, then you’ll shoot for that goal. The fact that Froch is talking about a low goal of wanting to beat DeGale kind of tells you a little about Froch right now. I hate to say it but I think there might be some issues with Froch’s confidence. If that’s the case then he needs to stay retired, because he might even fail in trying to beat a limited fighter like DeGale.

“There’s no point in coming back and fighting me, trust me,” DeGale said.

I think Froch kind of shot his load with his two fights against domestic level fighter George Groves. When Froch went life and death with Groves in their first fight, I think it was pretty clear that Froch didn’t have it anymore as a fighter. That should have been an easy fight for Froch, but instead he was dropped and dominated by Groves until getting a controversial stoppage loss in the 9th round, when referee Howard John Foster jumped on Groves and suddenly put him in a headlock. It was all very strange. Froch then nailed the defenseless Groves with two shots while he was being held in a headlock by Foster. Why Froch wasn’t disqualified is unknown.
