De La Hoya won’t commit to Canelo vs. Golovkin fight

de la hoya555By Dan Ambrose: After Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) defeated Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) tonight by a 12 round unanimous decision to win the vacant WBC middleweight title, Canelo said that he’ll fight IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) next if that’s what the boxing fans want from him.

However, it looks now like Canelo spoke too soon, because his promoter Oscar De La Hoya, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, said at the post-fight press conference that there are other fights for Canelo at 154 and 160. De La Hoya said they’ll be sitting down with Canelo to decide on who his next opponent should be.

In other words, De La Hoya isn’t willing to commit to a fight between Canelo and Golovkin for his next fight at this time. De La Hoya said that Canelo absolutely will be fighting in May and September of 2016, but as far as who Canelo fights next, it’s still undecided.

“That’s exactly what we’re [Canelo] going to sit down and walk about,” De La Hoya said at the post-fight press conference tonight about who Canelo will be fighting in his next fight in May 2016. “It’s very interesting because there’s the Triple G fight. There’s obviously other fights at 154. I have to get a feel for what Canelo wants to do. What his body tells him to do. Making the weight; he made 154 ½, I believe. So the question is will he stay at 154 or stay at 160. Those are the things we’re going to talk about. I’m not saying he’s going to fight somebody else. I’m not announcing anything. We’re going to talk about it. If he going to fight Triple G? Absolutely, of course. It’s not a question. Canelo is willing to fight anybody. The very best. That’s who he is. He’s made his mark. Canelo is the guy who is at the top of the sport now, and the fans deserve the best fight, and that’s what we deliver,” De La Hoya said.

Before De La Hoya started speaking to the media tonight, there was a lot of excitement among the media members about the potential fight between Canelo and Golovkin. Canelo had told Max Kellerman of HBO that he’d be willing to fight Golovkin. But then De La Hoya cooled off the media members by saying that he’s going to be sitting down and deciding with Canelo who he should fight next.

“If you want me to fight him [Golovkin] now, I’ll put the gloves on and fight him now. He’s a great champion, but right now I’ll put the gloves on and fight him,” Canelo said.

I get the feeling that the last thing that De La Hoya wants to do is feed his golden goose Canelo to a fighter like Gennady Golovkin, because this guy is for real, and isn’t another one of the undersized opponents that Canelo has been feeding off of. Look at it from De La Hoya’s perspective. If he let’s Canelo fight Golovkin, then he’ll likely get his golden goose plucked clean by Golovkin, and that in turn will ruin things for Canelo. His future PPV fights will likely bring in fewer buys, and hge may not ever rebound from the loss to become the money maker he is now.
