De La Hoya hoping Mayweather will fight Canelo next

1-canelo-cotto (9)By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya is hoping Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. will come out of retirement if/when he sees Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) defeat former WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) this Saturday night in their fight at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

De La Hoya would like to see his red rooster avenge his loss from two years ago in 2013, a fight in which Canelo was totally dominated in and badly exposed in getting totally outclassed.

Both De La Hoya and Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach are hoping that Mayweather will be lured out of retirement by the glitz of fighting their guys after Saturday’s fight on HBO pay per view.

Neither De La Hoya nor Roach are talking about wanting to have their fighters face the WBC interim middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin due to the danger involved with that fight. GGG is more trouble than he’s worth right now, and it doesn’t look like Cotto or Canelo want that fight right now.

“There’s a fight that would make me really happy, and that’s getting a rematch for ‘Canelo’ with Mayweather,” De La Hoya said via the latimes.com. “Do I believe it can happen? Absolutely! This is going to resurrect boxing, bring back passion and excitement after the disappointment of the Mayweather fight.”

As far as De La Hoya’s believe that the Cotto vs. Canelo fight will resurrect boxing, it’s doubtful. Canelo hasn’t looked good for a long time, and he arguably lost to Erislandy Lara last year. Unless Canelo can fight at a higher level than he did in the Lara fight, we’re likely going to see Canelo suffer stamina issues and fail to impress the boxing fans on Saturday night.

“Why I’d like to see a knockout is because Mayweather couldn’t knock [Canelo] out and I would like Mayweather next.”

Cotto is going to need to really flatten Canelo early in this fight in order for Mayweather to be interested in that fight with the Puerto Rican fighter a second time. I don’t know if the money is good enough to get Mayweather to come out of retirement because he can make better money fighting Manny Pacquiao a second time rather than facing Cotto again.
