Cotto vs Canelo: “I don’t need a title”

cotto-media (3)By Gerardo Granados: As the reader already knows the WBC stripped Miguel Cotto from their middleweight strap and now the belt will be at stake only for Canelo Alvarez Saturday at the Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas, USA. It seems like there is a small group of boxers who believe they are bigger than prize fighting and also might think that all fight fans are casuals who will buy expensive Pay Per Views because their name heads the event.

According to The Ring Magazine Boxing Analyst Andreas Hale, Cotto stated and I quote: “I don’t need a title,” he continued. “The fight sells by itself and everybody knows what to expect from Saul and me. I work my butt off every day with Freddie (Roach) and I know I have everything to beat Canelo on my side.”

According to another article written by ESPN Boxing Expert Dan Rafael, Cotto stated and I quote: “I have enough belts in my house. And with the money I saved, I can buy any belt I want,” Cotto said. “And I can be the champion of whatever I want in my house.”

There is some truth in Cotto´s words. He really doesn`t need a title, because according to Dan Rafael Cotto paid to Gennady Golovkin $800,000 notes on a step aside agreement, which means Cotto paid to avoid his mandatory duties and now refuses to pay sanction fees he knows are common for title bouts. So why would he need a title that he can choose to defend by offering money to the mandatory challenger or drop it by not paying fees he has often paid in the past

Lineal titles mean little and the organization champions acting like Boxing Divas who also believe their name is big enough for us fight fans to respect it because in the past they acted correctly are only misleading themselves.

By not paying the sanction fee now Cotto can argue he was stripped off the belt and if he wins, which I believe he will by Split Decision, now he won’t be forced to fight against Gennady Golovkin.

Sad thing is that according to Oscar Dela Hoya his main boxer Canelo Alvarez would fight against Golovkin in a year and a half. So does that means that Golovkin would have to wait that much if Canelo beats Cotto?

I have no doubt that Miguel Cotto can buy himself another belt at 155 pounds but I doubt he can buy respect from us the fight fans by avoiding Gennady GGG Golovkin.

When Yuri Foreman lost his WBA super welter title to Cotto, he did it with class and did everything he could to defend it. If you haven’t seen that bout you could spend a good time watching how a Champion acts defending his crown without any Diva attitude.

I need to see more pride on a Champion when he defends what cost him so much sacrifice to obtain, but sadly there are a few boxers who simply disappoint me with their arrogant diva attitudes.

Does Cotto really need any title?
