1-cotto-vs-alvarez (13)By Adam Mccoy: Firstly I’d like to say welcome to my first article of Boxing Covered, I have spent years writing the odd article and being a daily viewer on many on the main boxing sites around the net. I thought it was time I put my time into something hopefully everyone can enjoy and comment, I want to create discussions and debates that are totally unbiased.

I will give my views and my predictions on upcoming bouts from a boxing perspective not a personal perspective and I hope you readers appreciate that and enjoy my work. I have just opened a new twitter page where I will be adding all my boxingnews24.com articles along with other information daily, so please follow me @Boxing_Covered.

First of all how can we look past the mega fight this weekend. I fully expect this fight to live up to the expectations that the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao simply didn’t. I can see this fight starting slowly with maybe a quiet first 3 rounds but sooner or later this fight will turn into a war. I disagree with the argument that Saul “Canelo Alvarez’s age will be the deciding factor, Yes, Canelo is young and hungry and supposedly the new “PPV star” but I have no doubt what so ever we are going to see a ready and focused Miguel Cotto. You look at Brandon Rios turning up to face Timothy Bradley in awful condition looking like he hadn’t fully prepared, I just don’t think Cotto has that side to him.

Trainer Freddie Roach knows Cotto is much older and he will of made sure Cotto is in fantastic condition and ready whatever Canelo brings. This is probably the biggest fight in boxing right now and I think a win for both fighters is crucial. Canelo was young enough to rebuild after his one sided loss to Mayweather but to stay at the top of the game and certainly be the PPV star he’s expected to be he needs to be winning these fights. As for Cotto he has publicly said he plans to retire shortly and only sees himself having another two or three fights. If Cotto sees dollar signs and wants to cash out an extremely rich man then winning this fight is also crucial. I think a victory for Cotto could tempt a Mayweather return. It’s no secret that 50th victory is something on the back of Floyd’s mind. When you think of Mayweather fights that actually got people on the edge of their seat you think of Mayweather Vs Cotto. I think Mayweather would fancy a Cotto rematch but it would take a sensational Cotto performance to seal it.

I don’t see Cotto ever taking the Golovkin fight so if Mayweather won’t fight Cotto it’s hard to see who else he could face if victorious. As for Canelo the possibilities are endless as he’s still very young, I personally think the winner should face Golovkin but that’s a story for another day. I can see De La Hoya putting Canelo in with guys like Lemiux and Bradley before letting him in with Golovkin. Back to this fight though and my prediction, it’s a tough fight to call but Im putting my money on Canelo with a late stoppage. I can see knockdowns from both fighters and this will certainly be a fight of the year classic but yes I predict a Canelo KO after the 9th.

That’s not the only eagerly anticipated fight, On Saturday night Anthony Crolla will attempt to make it second time lucky in his bid to capture a world title. If you know Crolla’s story it’s hard not be an Anthony Crolla fan. The guy suffered a broken ankle and a fractured skull, whilst attempting to take down burglars he was hit with a concrete slab and even waking up every morning must be a blessing to Crolla. To return from a life threatening incident like that and step back inside a boxing ring is one thing, but to fight for a world title in your hometown in front of a sold out arena in your first fight back must of been something else. If you watched the first fight and know anything about boxing then you know the decision was a bad one and Anthony Crolla should be making his first title defence not having a rematch.

I felt for him last time out, there had been question marks over whether Crolla belonged at world level and he certainly proved he does. However just because Crolla in many people’s eyes won the first fight does not by any means mean this will be the same. To think Perez is going to come fight the exact same fight he did last time out is crazy. Perez will not make the same mistakes twice, he will of studied the tapes over and over again. Maybe he under estimated Crolla and he certainly won’t do that again, not to mention the two points he had deducted. As much as I’d be delighted for Crolla to win a world title after what he’s been through I see Perez winning this rather convincingly. With that said I’m saying Perez by unanimous decision.

The last topic I want to discuss is the return of David Haye. It’s official he’s back in the gym and is being trained by Shane Mcguigan who trains Carl Frampton. David Haye gets a lot of stick for his performance against Klitschko that well to be honest wasn’t really a performance. But the fact is Haye is exciting he’s fast he can punch with both hands and he can certainly sell a fight. At 35 years old I still don’t think there’s many heavyweights he couldn’t KO. Haye has returned at the perfect time because we all saw Haye playing with Wilder in sparring and we all know Fury really wants to fight Haye. If Fury were to beat Klitschko then Haye I’m sure would be looking at both heavyweight champions and really fancying his chances. But one step at a time as he needs to earn his shot I wouldn’t like him to just be handed a title match on a plate. Rumor has it Haye has said he wants to be active and is willing to put a winning streak together and force his way to the top of the rankings. I think discussions are already in place to have Haye fight on the Frampton vs Quigg undercard and I’ve put together a list of opponents baring in mind he’s been inactive for three years.

Erkan Teper:

Beating the European champion and going down that route would show his commitment and willingness to work his way up. An undefeated opponent who is fresh off blasting out fellow country man David Price may be tempting. I’m sure Haye would have very little trouble scoring a knockout and it’s definitely a credible opponent providing he beats Helenius.

Malik Scott:

Scott was once a promising undefeated heavyweight but knockout losses to Deontay Wilder and Derek Chisora seemed to have finished him off. With a successful victory over Tony Thompson a fight against Haye would definitely make Scott relevant again however once again I can’t look past a Haye stoppage.

Bermane Stiverne:

Former heavyweight champion and the only person to take Deontay Wilder 12 rounds. Didn’t look to promising in his last fight but he got the victory. If Haye could get Stiverne out people will compare his performance to Wilders soon enough the Haye vs Wilder talks will start.

I’m glad he’s back and he’s looking in fantastic shape. If he can fight with his fists and not his mouth we could be seeing the best David Haye ever. I’m eagerly awaiting to see who his opponent is and can’t wait to see the hayemaker back in action.

Thanks for the read guys and please keep an eye out for my next article where we will be looking ahead to Fury Vs Klitschko Joshua Vs Whyte and how the Quigg vs Frampton fight is a step in the right direction for British boxing.
