Wilder: Fury has a chance, but fans interested in Klitschko-Wilder

wilderBy Scott Gilfoid: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder (35-0, 34 KOs) feels that unbeaten light hitting Tyson Fury (24-0, 18 KOs) does have a chance at unseating IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-3, 53 KOs) in their fight next month on November 28th at the ESPRIT Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany.

But even though Fury has a chance in this fight, Wilder notes that the boxing fans are mainly interested in a Wilder vs. Klitschko fight. That’s the one they want to see. In other words, that fight drowns out Klitschko-Fury or Fury vs. Wilder.

Wladimir is the guy that is Wilder’s main competition. Fury is just a slapper who was almost knocked out by the smallish 210lb Steve Cunningham, and who has been matched pretty softly most of his career.

“I definitely give Tyson a chance in this,” Wilder said via the BBC World Service “But all the talk is about a Klitschko v Wilder fight, and if Klitschko prevails in that fight [with Fury] then we can look forward to [it].

I have to agree with Wilder. The fight that interests most boxing fans is Wilder-Klitschko, because it matches two bangers with huge punching power and Olympic credentials. The last time I checked, Fury never fought in the Olympics.

The only thing Fury has really accomplished is becoming the heavyweight champion of Ireland after beating Martin Rogan while fighting southpaw. Fury hasn’t done anything, and he’s kind of an invisible man in the United States. You can’t make Wilder-Fury a PPV fight in the U.S, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Wilder-Klitschko wind up on Showtime PPV.

“I’m definitely looking forward to unifying the whole division no matter who has the [other] belts when it’s time for that unification bout,” Wilder said. “You know that’s my ultimate goal in boxing, to be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.”

Well, Wilder will have unified the entire heavyweight division if/when he defeats Wladimir. I mean, there’s no one else at all for Wilder to fight once he gets past Klitschko. Wilder can sit on top of his throne and enjoy himself as he looks over his heavyweight kingdom at the many contenders requesting an audience with the king.

There will be no point in Wilder facing Fury after Wladimir whips him. If anything, Wilder might throw a bone to Hughie Fury to give him an unearned world title shot, but that wouldn’t likely be much of a fight because Hughie has zero punching power, and he’s just a hit and run slapper. You can put a heavy emphasis on the running part with Hughie. Wilder would likely need to bring his track spikes with him if he wanted to be able to catch up to young Hughie to put him out of his misery.

“I’m looking forward to doing great things in the sport of boxing,” Wilder said. “A lot comes with this [being champion] but I’m looking forward to more in the future.”

Wilder has a fight coming up in January against an opponent still to be determined. It’ll be a stay busy fight for Wilder to get ready for his mandatory title defense against No.1 WBC Alexander Povetkin in early 2016.
