By Rick Jones III: The last 20 years boxing has been held by it’s throat by Floyd Mayweather Jr. The boxer that considers himself “The Greatest Of All Time,” had a real tight grip on the sport of boxing. The boxer then retired as of Sep 12th of 2015, which I have marked on my calendar the day boxing was reborn and possibly the best thing that has happen for the professional sport.
The pay-per-view numbers finally came out for the Gennady Golovkin – David Lemieux fight, which hit a little bit over 150,000 buys on HBO last Saturday night. So does that mean that the famous Triple G is not worthy of the throne Mayweather Jr. left behind? No…HELL NO! What this means is that the sport of boxing is actually level and balanced.
Every fighter is going to have to fight for there money, reputation, and respect. The days where fighters pick and choose is long gone and Floyd Mayweather Jr. helped shut that door and seal it shut. I have a great sense of pride and joy for the future of boxing. The sport that brought us great fights and battles in the ring is finally back where it needs to be.
If your not following what I am explaining and saying let me give some examples. The main divisions in boxing are The Heavyweight (200+lbs), Middleweight (154-168lbs), and Lightweight ( 135-147lbs).
Sorry if your not in those divisions the general public and every now and then boxing fan doesn’t pay attention. The division that will be booming in the next few years is going to be the Lightweight division and the boom already started with Mayweather Jr. retirement and fights being made that are really worth watching and thanks to Al Haymon and the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC), the general public really don’t need to spend any money on PPVs anymore and unless they want to.
The future is very bright and it is all starting with a great fight in November with WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley vs. Brandon Rios and then in December, if the rumors hold true, WBA “regular” welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman vs. former IBF welterweight champion Shawn “Showtime” Porter. The layout just gets better with all the possible fights Danny Garcia vs. Marcos Maidana , Amir Khan vs. Kell Brook, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. “Triple G” Golovkin ..ETC
All I am saying is the numbers for PPV don’t matter anymore. Triple G is a great fighter and he is doing his thing as far as boxing goes. The business aspect of it doesn’t matter to him. The goal he has set out is to be the best and the only way to do that is to beat the best.
