Thoughts on GGG

1-GolovkinLemieux_Hoganphotos1By Reveriano: Last Saturday night’s Gennady Golovkin vs David Lemieux fight was a real bargain in my opinion. For $50 dollars you were able to watch some great action packed fights. But the dust has settled and it is time for us so called commentators to give our opinion. My opinion being that this was a great fight that shows some of the serious problems in the industry.

I would like to first state that I find it incredible that some people are arguing or stating that the fight was boring. That Golovkin didn’t come out to fight and under-performed. I find this incredible because Golovkin showed that defensive styles are not the only way to control and box an opponent out. Meaning that he offensively controlled and completely dominated his opponent. A fight stoppage is the clearest sign to me that the winner was offensive in nature. I honestly hope that more fighters forget about the boring “Mayweather” style and move towards this fan friendly offensive style.

The second comment that I found very interesting was that GGG didn’t really care about Mexican fans. Yes, I am Mexican. And I can clearly come out and say that most Mexicans do not care about him. He is admired just like Manny Pacquiao and other non-Mexican fighters were admired. But in a world were there are other and will always be other Mexican fighters, GGG will not be able to be embraced. And this goes to the heart of his problem.

The third comment is in regards to the supposed low PPV numbers. Many are arguing that this fight under performed and GGG is not a true PPV star. There is some truth in this but I think the elephant in the room is just pay-per-view fatigue. Honestly, boxing is the only sport where networks/promoters expect viewers to pay very large sums to watch. And this year has been one of the worst in the terms of prices and duds. After the two huge extravagant duds of Mayweather this year, the casual fan is not going to pay to watch anything. I would go on record and even cite that the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto fight will under perform.

The fight was very enjoyable and I honestly don’t know what Lemiuex was thinking with that hair style of his. But despite the hype everyone knew that GGG was going to win. GGG will not become another Guillermo Rigondeaux , but he will become another Wladimir Klitschko. A great respected fighter that dominates his division but a fighter that doesn’t mean anything in America because there is no emotional attachment to him that can push you to spend such large sums to watch him for 30 minutes.
