Should Mayweather give Pacquiao a rematch?

Ruslan ProvodnikovBy Allan Fox: Manny Pacquiao surprised everyone on Tuesday when he said that he’s still negotiation a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. for a rematch between them in 2016. It’s unclear whether Pacquiao was being on the level when he said he was negotiating with Mayweather though, because the American star’s CEO of his Mayweather Promotions organization Leonard Ellerbe had this to say about a second fight against Pacquiao: “Mayweather is retired, end of discussion.”

Pacquiao isn’t hiding his desire for a second fight against the 38-year-old Mayweather, saying “I don’t know yet who my opponent is next but we’re still negotiating right now about the rematch with Floyd Mayweather so hoping for that.”

The question is should Mayweather bother giving Pacquiao a second fight or not? The other question I can Mayweather not to fight Pacquiao again? If you’re keeping up with Mayweather’s life outside of the ring lately, you’ll note that he’s blowing money at an alarming rate.

Mayweather is spending huge amounts of money purchasing cars, and there’s talk of him blowing a lot of money this week in a nightclub in Las Vegas, Nevada. The kind of spending has to eventually catch up to Mayweather at some point because it’s unlikely that he’s now bringing in huge money on his investments to replace the money he’s spending.

Unless Mayweather is making millions per day, he’s not going to be able to keep up with this lifetime for very long without hitting bottom and going completely broke. For that reason, it is in Mayweather’s best interest to go back to the bank one or two more times in 2016 to face Pacquiao a second time, and then look to face the winner of the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto fight.

Those are the two biggest money fights available for Mayweather. No one is expecting Mayweather to fight the best fighter in the 160lb division in Gennady Golovkin, because that obviously would be too dangerous of a fight for Mayweather. But he can definitely still beat the likes of Canelo or Cotto, and make a huge amount of money.

My guess is Mayweather can make at least $200 million for two fights in 2016 if he comes back to face Pacquiao a second time and the winner of the Cotto-Canelo fight.

Mayweather’s current net worth is listed from $280 million to $400 million right now. But if he can come back for two fights in 2016 against the above named fighters, he can almost double his income. This means that Mayweather would be able to keep up with his current spending habits for a good while longer before he eventually goes broke, which is what I see happening within 5-10 years if he doesn’t get a handle on his spending habits.

If Mayweather was smart, he’d face Pacquiao twice in 2016, and then slip in a third fight against the Cotto-Canelo winner. That would put Mayweather’s earnings in the $300 million range for 2016 unless the boxing public has totally soured on him and his high priced PPV fights.
