By Tim Fletcher: Immediately after Viktor Postol (28-0, 12 KOs) captured the vacant WBC light welterweight title last night with a 10th round knockout win over Lucas Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs) at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, a lot of boxing fans began to speculate when or if a unification fight between Postol and newly crowned WBA 140lb champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner (31-2, 22 KOs) can be made.

Broner won the vacant WBA light welterweight title with a 12th round knockout over former WBA 140lb champ Khabib Allakhverdiev (19-2, 9 KOs) last night on Showtime at the U.S Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio. To be sure, a unification fight between Broner and Postol would be a big fight and one that a lot of fans would be interested in seeing.

Postol isn’t sure if a fight between him and Broner can take place because he’s happy in fighting on HBO at this time. Broner fights on Showtime and Premier Boxing Champions. Further, Postol is with Top Rank and Broner with Al Haymon.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has litigation pending against Haymon. All of that would seem to be a huge obstacle that could get in the way of Broner and Postol facing each other in the near future.

I can’t see them fighting, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they never fight each other. Postol is 31, and he’s probably not going to be around as long as Broner. Someone will figure out Postol’s style sooner or later and create a blueprint in how to beat him.

“I don’t know what to say about Adrien Broner, but I’m fighting on a fight network [HBO] that I want to remain on right now,” Postol said at the post-fight press conference last night.

I think Broner would beat Postol if that fight took place. Broner would walk Postol down and nail him with heavy single shots. Broner is really good on the inside, and I think he would hurt Postol with uppercuts. It would be a really hard fight for Postol, but not as hard for Broner because he would have the power and hand speed advantage.

The way to beat Postol is by using a lot of pressure to get to him, and then not let him rest in the clinches. A fighter that lands fast clubbing shots to the side of the head over and over again would beat Postol if he tried to clinch all night long like he did last night. Someone like Shawn Porter would be a real problem for Postol because he wouldn’t be able to just clinch him and wait for the referee to separate them.

Porter would keep working in the clinches and give Postol a lot of headaches. But Porter and Postol will likely never face each other unless Postol’s promoter Bob Arum wants that fight to happen. I don’t think he’d want that fight for Postol. He’s got a good situation with Postol fighting at 140, because there are a lot of guys that he can take advantage of in this weight class.
