Porter: My fight with Thurman will be one of the greatest of all time

porter6809By Dan Ambrose: Former IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs) is already excited about his proposed December 12th fight against WBA “regular” welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs). Porter was interviewed tonight by ESPN during the Devon Alexander vs. Aron Martinez fight on the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) card in Arizona.

Porter said that his fight with the 26-year-old Thurman will “be one of the great fights of all time.”

It’s still unknown if the Thurman-Porter fight will take place, but you can bet that if it does, it’ll wind up on one of the PBC cards. The fight will ultimately come down to their adviser Al Haymon and Thurman. Porter obviously wants the fight in the worst way, but we still don’t know how Thurman feels about taking on a tough fighter like Porter.

We know that Thurman wasn’t excited about fighting the hard-hitting Errol Spence when that fight was offered to him by Floyd Mayweather Jr. for his September 12th card. It would have been a great opportunity for Thurman to take the fight, potentially win one of Mayweather’s titles, and get a lot of attention from the boxing fans that tuned in to see Mayweather. It stands to reason that if Thurman wasn’t excited at fighting Spence, then he mnight not be too keen on getting in the ring to fight a tough opponent like Porter.

Porter directed a tweet to Thurman, saying “Let’s make this happen.” But instead of Thurman replying back with an answer, there was nothing from him. I have a feeling that Thurman isn’t going to take the fight with Porter. After all, Haymon usually gives Thurman names for him to pick from for his fights, and he can select from them.

Thurman says that for his last fight against Luis Collazo last July, he was offered only that name from Haymon. But if Thurman is offered two of three names, I doubt that he’ll select Porter if his name is one of them.

I highly doubt that a fight between Thurman and Porter will be one of the greatest of all time. I see it more of a case of one of the greatest track meets of all time, because Thurman will likely be running from Porter all night just like he did in his win over 40-year-old Leonard Bundu.
