PBC Oct 17th VA boxing(Photo Credit: Suzanne Teresa/Premier Boxing Champions) By Jim Dower: In a very close fight that could have gone either way, Lamont Peterson (34-3-1, 17 KOs) edged #5 IBF 140lb contender Felix Diaz (17-1, 8 KOs) on Saturday afternoon on Premier Boxing Champions on NBC from the EagleBank Arena at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.

This was not one of Peterson’s better performances. He was given a lot of close rounds by the judges in which he was getting hit with short punches from the 5’5″ Diaz. I thought the fight should have been scored a draw if not a win for Diaz. The judges scored it 114-114, 117-111 and 116-112.

Peterson used his height and reach to box the shorter Diaz in the later rounds of the fight. However, Diaz was still able to get inside on Peterson in the 10th and 12th rounds to dominate the action.

“Diaz didn’t surprise me because I knew he would be difficult. I said in the fighter meetings, I’d rather fight taller fighters. He’s a southpaw and he has some great experience. I knew he would be tough because it was his big opportunity and he wanted to win,” Peterson said. “It was a good tough 12 round fight. I started out strong and faded in the middle rounds because I started to cramp and it lasted for the rest of the fight, but I knew I had done enough to win the fight. No more playing around, its time to move up in weight. I knew Diaz was a great fighter. He’s been boxing 20 years just like me. At the end of the day, a victory is a victory.”

In the co-feature bout, undefeated welterweight Terrel Williams (15-0, 13 KOs) defeated Premier Boxing Champions regular Prichard Colon (16-1, 13 KOs) by a 9th round disqualification. Williams was dominated most of the fight by Colon. However, in the later rounds, Colon began to fade and take shots. In the 9th, Williams knocked Colon down twice. The fight was halted due to Colon’s corner taking his gloves off after the 9th round.

Colon was docked two points for low blow in the 5th. Williams had his own problems in losing a point in the 7th for tagging Colon with a rabbit punch.

Colon looked good at times, but he clearly fell apart in the later rounds. He was rushed too quickly in being put in with a fighter as good as Williams. If you look at the guys that Colon had been fighting before this, he was pushed up considerably from the weak opponents he’d been feasting on.
