Mayweather was NOT lazy and weak against Berto

Floyd Mayweather vs Andre BertoBy Chris Williams: There are small segment of the boxing community who think that Floyd Mayweather Jr. looked bad in his last fight against former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto in his last fight on September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Boxing great Roberto Duran is one of them. He says that Mayweather looked “lazy” and “weak” against Berto. I don’t agree with that at all. Mayweather was no lazy, and definitely wasn’t weak. The reason why Mayweather didn’t bring his usual A-game against Berto was because he didn’t need to.

Mayweather simply kept it in 1st gear in that fight rather than in switching to 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. Mayweather didn’t need to shift through all of his gears in order to dominate Berto. The 1st gear was more than enough. If Mayweather is guilty of anything in the Berto fight, it wasn’t that of him being lazy and weak.

It was in him fighting down to the level of his competition. It’s kind of like when you talk to someone from a different educational background as you. If you don’t try and match their conversational level, then you’re not going to have a good conversation.

What Mayweather did was the equivalent of that by taking it easy on Berto and not totally clowning him and making him look bad in front of a large national audience. I think Mayweather did the same thing in his fights against Miguel Cotto and Robert Guerrero in the past.

“It was a very bad fight. I thought the other guy [Berto] would give a better performance,” Duran said to Fighthub. “He didn’t do anything. Mayweather looked lazy. I saw that he looked loose and weak. He was running, doing clown stuff, because that’s the only resource he has at this point. He looked washed up. No power. He had nothing and it was better he retired before someone hurts him, and then he can’t enjoy the millions that he’s made, Duran said.

If Mayweather comes back in 2016 to resume his boxing career, you can bet that he’ll be bringing the A-game that he used to defeat the Filipino star Manny Pacquiao on May 2nd of this year in the “Fight of the Century.”

If Mayweather faces someone like Miguel Cotto, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Pacquiao, Danny Garcia, Gennady Golovkin, Shawn Porter or Tim Bradley, we’re going to see the same Mayweather that made Canelo and Pacquiao look so bad.

Mayweather is too kind. That’s his main problem. If he were a mean fighter, he’d go out and immediately go out and start clowning his opposition instead of fighting at a slower pace in order to give them a chance to compete with him. When you have the kind of talent that Mayweather has, you get used to winning in 1st gear. It can be boring for the fans when Mayweather is really schooling one of his opponents because the fights become so one-sided that it’s not enjoyable to watch. The problem that Mayweather has is that there’s nobody good enough to give him a decent fight.
