By Allan Fox: #1 WBC Jermell Charlo (26-0, 11 KOs) says he’s frustrated that Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs) is still in possession of two of the titles [WBA & WBC] at junior middleweight and isn’t defending those titles.

The 25-year-old Charlo would like to get a chance to fight for one of them, but he can’t due to Mayweather holding onto them and in retirement. For some reason the sanctioning bodies haven’t yet stepped in to strop the 38-year-old Mayweather of those titles or his welterweight titles. Charlo is willing to fight Mayweather for one of them and would even give him a catch-weight to fight at to make it easier.

“If Floyd Mayweather wants to continue holding that title, I’m a young gun and am coming to try and take it,” Charlo told ESPN.com. “If Floyd wants to hold it, then come fight me. I’m ranked No. 1 at 154 [by the WBC] so we can make a weight adjustment.”

I don’t think Charlo is high on Mayweather’s list to fight when/if he does return to the ring. Indeed, it’s doubtful that Mayweather will defend either of his 154lb titles at all if he comes back in 2016.

Most likely, Mayweather will fight someone like Manny Pacquiao in a rematch next year at 147 rather than fighting a junior middleweight. I don’t think Mayweather is even going to bother ever defending his 154lb titles. It’s not like he ever has.

Since winning the belts against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in 2013, Mayweather has fought at welterweight against Marcos Maidana and Pacquiao. There have not been any defenses of those titles.

“He [Mayweather] has yet to fight a young, black, undefeated fighter and a hungry one at the same time. I felt [Andre] Berto was young and black, but not hungry and obviously not within my caliber as a top contender.”

Mayweather said it himself that Berto was his last fight of his career. That seemed to be the justification for fighting him. The WBA made it easy on Mayweather by having Berto as their interim WBA welterweight champion after he beat the non-top 15 ranked Josesito Lopez earlier this year. Berto looked really poor in that fight and was trailing at the time of the stoppage. Had Berto been required to fight a top contender like Shawn Porter, I think he would have been easily beaten.

Charlo faces 38-year-old Joachim Alcine (35-7-2, 21 KOs) this Saturday night on Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on NBC Sports Net from the NRG Arena, in Houston, Texas. Also on the card is Tony Harrison vs. Cecil McCalla. Charlo isn’t doing himself any favors by fighting a journeyman like Alcine because he should be looking to fight a rematch against Vanes Martirosyan, who Charlo defeated by a controversial 10 round decision last March.

If Charlo wants to be seen in the same light as his brother Jermall Charlo, who holds the IBF 154lb title, then he needs to show that he’s able to beat the quality fighters without controversy, and he needs to be fighting the top guys all the time instead of dipping into the lower fighters from yesterday.

Charlo needs to improve on his punching power because he’s not a big puncher like his brother Jermall, and he needs punching power to compete against the best fighters at 154. Charlo arguably lost to the stronger Martirosyan due to his lack of power, but he was given a big break by the judges.
