(Photo credit: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment) By Tim Fletcher: WBA World middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (30-1, 27 KOs) has sized up his unbeaten opponent former WBO 160lb champ Peter Quillin (32-0-1, 23 KOs), and he knows what he’s getting himself into in their fight on December 5th on Showtime Championship Boxing from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Jacobs sees flaws in the 32-year-old Quillin’s game that he feels that are areas that he can take advantage of when the two of them start trading shots for real. Jacobs notes that Quillin is slow on his feet, and focuses too much on loading up on his shots with everything he has.
That’s something that Quillin has always done during his career, and he been able to get away with it thus far. Of course, the best opponent that Quillin has face during his career is Andy Lee, who fought him to a draw. There are other middleweights that would be tough outs for Quillin such as Gennady Golovkin, Billy Joe Saunders, Tureano Johnson, Chris Eubank Jr., Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Miguel Cotto.
Quillin has moved in different lanes by his promoters and his adviser Al Haymon, and it’s kept him from being really tested in his career. It’s also prevented Quillin from getting the bigger paydays and won more fans.
“Peter’s flaws are that he loads up his shots too much, is slow on his feet and isn’t headstrong. If I can execute the game plan I think it will be a phenomenal outcome,” Jacobs said.
If Jacobs can land some of the big shots that he used to stop Sergio Mora in his last fight, then Quillin might be tasting defeat for the first time in his career. However, Jacobs does not have a good chin at all, and if Quillin can land one of his big bombs flush, I suspect that we’ll see Jacobs hit the deck.
Mora put Jacobs down, and he’s not considered a big puncher. Dmitry Pirog stopped Jacobs five years ago in six rounds. I think Jacobs’ chin has not improved over the years. The way he was dropped by Mora suggests that he’s still very vulnerable.
“I expect Danny to bring his great chin to this fight. I didn’t notice it before but his chin looks very huge, so that’s what we’re looking at now,” Quillin said. “I’m coming to throw bombs. This is the type of fight that is going to bring the best out of Peter Quillin.”
Quillin still talking about himself in the third person, I see. He’s very confident of his boxing skills and talent, but still very untested. Jacobs will be Quillin’s second test of his career.
Andy Lee was his first and he didn’t pass that test. That’s an incomplete as far as I’m concerned. The fight was scored a draw. Quillin could have won the fight if he didn’t run out of gas in the 2nd half of the fight and get dominated by Lee. Quillin will need to use a lot more finesse int his fight than he did in his recent mismatch against Michael Zerafa last September.
