Hughie Fury: Deontay Wilder won’t be heavyweight champion by next year

fury433By Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight prospect Hughie Fury (16-0, 8 KOs) says he doesn’t think that WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (35-0, 34 KOs) will be a champion by next year in 2016, because he thinks that his cousin #1 WBO Tyson Fury (24-0, 18 KOs) will have beaten him and IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko to unify all the titles in the division. Hughie, 6’6”, is predicting that Tyson will score a knockout over Wladfimir in their fight next month on November 28th.

It’s interesting that Hughie feels that Wilder won’t last long as the WBC heavyweight champion because he had a chance to fight him recently but he opted not to take the fight. Hughie says that he was only given three weeks’ notice to take the fight for September 26th, but from I remember that when Hughie’s trainer Peter Fury mentioned that he had just received an offer for the fight against Wilder there was still 7 ½ weeks to go before September 26th, so I’m not sure where Hughie gets this 3 weeks stuff. As far as I can tell, it was 7 ½ weeks to go before the fight.

“I would have taken the fight with Deontay Wilder, but he only gave me three weeks’ notice,” Hughie said to secondsout. “By next year, I don’t think Deontay will still be heavyweight champion. That’s what I think of Deontay Wilder. He talks a lot of [expletive]. Tyson will get the belts and reign on. So I’m looking forward to that. I’ve seen him do a few interviews, mouthing off and all that. I know one day I’ll be heavyweight champion,” Hughie said.

wow, Hughie is really flapping his gums for a fighter who turned down a once in a lifetime title shot against the talented Deontay. I wonder if Hughie is now kicking himself for not taking the fight. It’s like Hughie was given a free lottery ticket to a huge payday and he failed to take it. He could have bought a nice flat with the payday he got from a title shot against Wilder.

Well, it’s too bad Hughie didn’t accept the fight with Wilder, because I suspect that’ll be the only chance he’ll ever get to fight for a world title. Wilder, perhaps out of the kindness of his heart, threw Hughie a bone by offering him a title shot and he chose not to snatch it.

It would have been perfect to setup an eventual Wilder vs. Tyson Fury fight, because Wilder would have first knocked Hughie out in 1 or 2 rounds, and then Tyson could have tried to avenge the loss. It would have setup the perfect ‘revenge of the Fury’s’ fight, but Hughie blew it by not taking the fight. But heck, even if it was 3 weeks instead of 7 ½, what does a 21-year-old fighter need 8 weeks for to get ready for a fight?

Look at Hughie’s next fight on November 14th at the City Academy Sports Centre, in Bristol, Avon, UK. Hughie still doesn’t even have an opponent picked out for the fight, and it’s only 2 weeks away. If he’s good with fighting a guy with less than 2 weeks preparation for the fight, then he should be fine with fighting on 3 weeks’ notice. Right? I mean, if it’s good enough for the goose than it should be good enough for the gander.

“I’m going to be fighting on the 14th of November, and on Tyson’s card on the 28th,” Hughie said. “I’m not too sure on the 14th. Still looking for an opponent. On the 28th, I’ve got Nicolai Firtha, so it’s going to be a good test. I think Tyson will knock him [Wladimir] out. I think Tyson has the ability to beat Klitschko. Klitschko has never seen anyone like Tyson. He doesn’t know what to expect. He doesn’t know what’s coming next. That’s why he pulled out. Tyson has got the edge on him. He’s afraid Tyson. He’s finished. He could go early. I’m supposed to fight John McDermott for the English title. I was trying to get him on the 14th, but John wants to do it at a different time,” Hughie said.

The 36-year-old Nicolai Firtha (21-11-1, 8 KOs) hasn’t fought in two years since being destroyed by Deontay in 4 rounds in 2013. As for “big” John McDermott (28-8, 18 KOs), he also hasn’t fought in two years since 2013. That’s not exactly sporting to face two flabby heavyweights that have been out of the ring for ages, is it?

It’s unclear if being inactive is now a prerequisite for a fight against Hughie. It doesn’t make any sense to me. Why isn’t Hughie fighting active fighters? I mean, I’m not asking him to fight any of the talented fringe contenders like Erkan Teper or Joseph Parker, but at least fight a 2nd tier fighter that is active and not just hanging out on the couch for two years.
