Golovkin’s trainer wants Lemieux to backup his tough talk

Abel Sanchez, the trainer for Golovkin, wants the fight to be an exciting affair with both guys throwing leather from start until the bitter finish. Lemieux has always been a slugger during his career, and that’s why Sanchez is hoping that he sticks to his original style of fighting so that Golovkin doesn’t have to chase him around the ring all night long like he’s been forced to do against some of his opponents.

“It’s [Golovkin vs. Lemieux] two weeks away and I hope it’s the fight that we all expect,” Sanchez said to Fighthype. “I hope when it gets hot in there that David is going to do what he says he’s going to do, because we’re all going to be treated to a great fight. Our job is to entertain, and fight the next guy they put in front of us. We’re fortunate that David Lemieux, the IBF champion, chose to take the fight,” Sanchez said.

I don’t think Lemieux has the wheels to move around much in the ring even if he wanted to. Lemieux’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions raves about his ability to box when he wants to, but I doubt that he’s going to be able to do much of that with Golovkin on his tail on October 17th in their fight at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Lemieux doesn’t have the stamina or the physique to move around much without gassing out badly. Lemieux is a straight up slugger. He is what he is. Lemieux was built to do one thing and that’s to try and score KOs.

If he tries to do something that his body isn’t equipped to do, then he’s going to get tired within three or four rounds and wind up getting knocked out. Lemieux was tired chasing his last opponent Hassan N’Dam around the ring last June and N’ Dam didn’t even move all that much in the fight. He still had Lemieux totally gassed out in the last five rounds of the fight.

Lemieux is going to go out there and try his best to score a knockout in the early going in the fight. If Golovkin is still upright after six rounds, then I think it’s going to be a full scale retreat like the one we saw from Napoleon.

Lemieux will be reeling big time after six rounds if Golovkin is still there and not buzzed from having eaten a lot of heavy blows. You can never tell. It’s possible that Golovkin could be punch drunk by the sixth round if he’s still around. He could be bleeding from cuts, or he could have an eye that’s almost completely closed.

In that case, Lemieux could turn into a shark in the last six rounds to try and finish the older 33-year-old Golovkin off. Lemieux might not even have to fight hard in the last six rounds if he has Golovkin beaten up enough. It could be a downhill ride for Lemieux if he has Golovkin bleeding and light headed from the many shots he was forced to take in the first six rounds.

“Those fights have been offered to Quillin,” Sanchez said. “He hides behind his veil. It’s been offered to Andy Lee, but unfortunately Gennady’s father passed away around that time. We chose to let Cotto fight Canelo. The winner of that fight has to fight us. If they don’t, then Gennady gets the WBC belt against somebody else,” Sanchez said.
