1-GolovkinLemieuxWeighIn_Hoganphotos1By Allan Fox: With an impressive knockout tonight against IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs), IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady GGG Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) could make a legion of boxing fans forget their bad experiences with Floyd Mayweather Jr’s recent boring fights against Manny Pacquiao and Andre Berto.

Besides being incredibly dull, those two fights were overpriced in the minds of a lot of boxing fans in having to pay between $65 and $100. In contrast, tonight’s clash between Golovkin and Lemieux is relatively cheap at $49.99, and promises entertainment from start to finish.

Boxing fans are a lot more careful with their money now after being given a bad deal with Mayweather’s last two fights, and they’re not going to easily give away their money like before. The fans weren’t willing to pay for Mayweather’s mismatch against Andre Berto in high numbers, and this shows that they learned their lesson after the boring Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.

Mayweather vs. Berto is rumored to have brought in between 400,000 and 550,000 PPV buys. While those would be good numbers for guys like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Miguel Cotto for their fights on PPV as the headline act, they’re terrible numbers for Mayweather, and I believe those were the fans saying that they’d had enough of his boring fights. Mayweather’s retirement comes at the perfect time to keep him from seeing other fights with disappointing PPV numbers.

Boxing fans want to be entertained by watching fighters that are willing to take a shot in order to deliver one of their own. The fans don’t want to see the hit and run style of Mayweather. Golovkin has knocked out all of his opponents during the last seven years of his career, and the fans know that he’ll be looking to KO Lemieux tonight.

If Golovkin doesn’t get the knockout tonight, he could get knocked out trying. The fans have to respect him for that. You don’t have to worry about Golovkin running for 12 rounds and stinking up the joint.

One would hope that Golovkin will get other fighters to copy his exciting fighting style because they’ll know that it will ultimately bring them success and a huge fan base in a short period of time.

Mayweather has his share of imitators like Keith Thurman and Adrien Broner, who use the hit and move style of fighting. But Golovkin could be the start of fighters looking to entertain the boxing fans instead of frustrating them with their movement, holding and reluctance to engage.
