Golovkin can’t replace Mayweather

1-MAYPAC WEIGH IN-TRAPPFOTOS-4815By Chris Williams: The more I see of WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, the more I realize that there is no replacing an incredible superstar like Floyd Mayweather Jr. The sport needs him now more than anything, and we’re already seeing that Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) is not going to be the one to take the baton from Mayweather. You don’t replace ‘The Best Ever’ [TBE] with a Golovkin.

We need Mayweather to come back to back on his throne to continue his domination of boxing. Las Vegas isn’t the same without Mayweather. He’s the one that brings the people to the city. He’s the one that brings excitement to the sport.

Golovkin can’t step into Mayweather’s big shoes, as much as some of the boxing industry might want him to. At best, Golovkin could someday become as popular as the likes of Tim Bradley or maybe Amir Khan, but definitely not Mayweather.

The boxing public has already spoken with the miserable PPV results Golovkin’s recent fight against David Lemieux brought in last Saturday. The fight brought in only 150,000 PPV buys on HBO. If that had been Mayweather vs. Lemieux, we would have likely seen 1 million buys.
Manny Pacquiao is about to be finished off by Terence Crawford in early 2016, as soon as Bob Arum orders that fight to take place. But in the meantime, Golovkin is not going to be the one to replace Mayweather.

If we don’t see Mayweather come back, then boxing is going to go into what you can call the ‘dark ages’ of the sport, where lesser talented fighters like Golovkin are going to be the lead guys. But those lesser talented guys aren’t going to bring in the fans to purchase the fights on pay-per-view, and they’re not going to win over new fans. That’s my view.

Can you imagine Golovkin attracting fans with his HBO 24/7 episodes? I can’t see it. Golovkin is too nice, he smiles too much, and he seems to wrestle with the English language. There aren’t subtitles to get out what Golovkin is trying to say, so we’re left with a lot of canned statements from him that we’ve already heard countless times.

Mayweather was the master in the All Access and 24/7 series, as he always made it interesting to watch him go about his business; whether that is to show off his fabulous houses and beautiful cars. You can’t replace a superstar like Mayweather with Golovkin. There’s no replacing Mayweather’s charisma with a guy like Golovkin. The hand speed, cat-like reflexes, nor the brilliant defensive skills of Mayweather can be replaced by Golovkin.

Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum is in a bind with Pacquiao heading towards retirement. Arum doesn’t have a PPV replacement for the Filipino. He thinks that there’s a possibility that his fighter WBO light welterweight champion Terence Crawford can take the baton from Pacquiao and take over for him. It’s not happening. Crawford won’t even be as popular as Golovkin. That’s the way I see it.

“There’s no downside for Crawford because he’s going to get enormous publicity. He won’t disgrace himself even if he lost [to Pacquiao] and he will make a lot of money,” Arum said to ESPN.com.

As you can see, Arum sounds like he’s already got the Pacquiao-Crawford fight all planned out. It looks like Pacquiao will be the old lion being taken out to be slaughtered by the younger lion Crawford. It doesn’t matter. Crawford won’t be the replacement for Pacquiao and definitely not the replacement for the true star of the boxing world Mayweather.
