Duran: Mayweather looked lazy, weak and loose against Berto

floyd56By Allan Fox: Boxing great Roberto Duran says he hopes that unbeaten Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr (49-0, 26 KOs) doesn’t return to the ring in 2016, because he feels that he’s a washed up, weak and lazy fighter at this point in his career. Duran says he saw Mayweather’s fight against Andre Berto on September 12th last month, and was no impressed with what he saw from either fighter.

Duran said that Berto was little more than “a nobody,” and that Mayweather was just clowning around the whole time. Duran says that Mayweather didn’t want to fight an up and coming fighter because he was afraid of getting hurt and then not being able to enjoy the millions that he’s made in the ring.

“It was a very bad fight. I thought the other guy [Berto] would give a better performance,” Duran said to Fighthub. “He didn’t do anything. Mayweather looked lazy. I saw that he looked loose and weak. He was running, doing clown stuff, because that’s the only resource he has at this point. What a shame that the other guy couldn’t do anything. He [Mayweather] fought a nobody because he has millions and millions, because he doesn’t want a guy coming up that can hurt him because he is finished. He looked washed up. No power. He had nothing and it was better he retired before someone hurts him, and then he can’t enjoy the millions that he’s made, Duran said.

Mayweather did look lazy and weak against Berto. But he also looked lazy and weak against Manny Pacquiao as well. The only thing that Mayweather had going for him in the Pacquiao fight was his jab, quick right hand and his movement.

I think it’s pretty clear that Mayweather didn’t want to face a quality opponent for his last fight in September, because he had a built in excuse for not facing someone good because he had recently beaten Manny Pacquiao by a 12 round decision. So instead of going out with a bang with his career, Mayweather pretty much decided to treat his last fight like it was a half day at work, where he picked out an easy guy in Berto, and then did little more than toy with him for 12 boring rounds. Instead of this helping Mayweather’s legacy, it hurt it in the eyes of a lot of boxing fans, and likely made it unlikely that he’ll be able to make good money like he has in the past if he does return to the ring in 2016.

To be sure, Mayweather will get a huge guarantee from HBO or Showtime if he fights again, but the pay-per-view buys for his next fight would likely be low unless he chooses to fight Manny Pacquiao, Gennady Golovkin or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. I don’t think a second Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto fight would sell. It would take someone like Golovkin, Pacquiao or Canelo. Mayweather probably wouldn’t fight Golovkin because the chances of Mayweather getting knocked out would be too high, especially if he looked as lazy and weak as he did against Berto.

“He [Mayweather] had a good career when there wasn’t anyone good,” Duran said. “If he had his career during the careers of the greats, Mayweather doesn’t show up on the radar at all. If he really did retire, then I hope he doesn’t come back because he already lost to that Mexican, and they gifted him the decision, [Jose Luis] Castillo. The people already know, but hey, he’s a guy that fills Las Vegas, right?”
