By Jim Dower: WBO World light flyweight champion Donnie Nietes (36-1-4, 21 KOs) will be making his 9th title defense this Saturday on October 17th against #8 WBO Juan Alejo (21-3, 13 KOs) at the StubHub Center, in Carson, California. Nietes, 33, is looking forward to his battle against the Mexican warrior Juan Alejo.

With the fight taking place in the United States, the Filipino Nietes has a chance to show off his skills and win new boxing fans. He’s been fighting most of his career in the Philippines, so it’s something new that he’s now in America fighting after having 12 years as a pro strictly in the Philippines.

If Nietes beats Alejo and looks good doing it, this could lead to other fights in the United States against other quality fighters.

Nietes has held his WBO light flyweight title for the past four years since capturing it in 2011 in beating Ramon Garcia Hirales by a 12 round unanimous decision. Since winning the title, Nietes has beaten the likes of Moises Fuentes, Sammy Gutierrez, Carlos Velarde, Gilberto Parra and Francisco Rodriguez Jr.

Nietes is considered by most boxing experts to be the best fighter in the light flyweight division bar none. His problem is getting good enough opposition to face him so that he can have competitive fights.

Nietes might be better off moving up to the flyweight division so that he can get fights against Roman Gonzalez, Brian Viloria, Juan Francisco Estrada, and Amnat Ruenroeng. Those guys would all be tough outs for Nietes, and he might not be able to get past all of them, especially in the case of Roman Gonzalez. He’s really hard to beat at this point in his career.

Nietes sparred with Viloria to get ready for his fight against Alejo this Saturday. The sparring matches were said to be really tough ones with a lot of give and take at Freddie Roach’s Wildcard Gym in Los Angeles, California. Viloria has a tough fight this Saturday night against WBC flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez in the co-feature bout on the undercard of the Gennady Golovkin vs. David Lemieux fight card on HBO pay-per-view from Madison Square Garden in New York.

Also on the card is super bantamweight Alberto Pagara facing Willie Gonzalez in a 10 round fight, light welterweight Jason Pagara fighting Santos Benavidez in a 10 round fight, and featherweight Mark Magsayo battling Yarley Suarez in a fight scheduled for 10 rounds.

Raul Caiz Jr will be the referee for the Nietes vs. Alejo fight. The three judges are Pat Russell, Lou Moret, and Marshall Walker III. The World Boxing Organization official supervisor is Richard de Cuir.
