Cotto has the advantage over Canelo, says Rosado

cotto (3)By Dan Ambrose: There are quite a few boxing fans who are leaning in the direction of Saul “ Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) to defeat WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) in their fight next month on November 21st on HBO pay-per-view at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Rosado thinks that Cotto’s superior boxing ability will enable him to out-box Canelo and get the victory. Rosado notes that the type of fighters that have given Cotto problems in the past where aggressive fighters that put a lot of pressure on him. Canelo doesn’t have the engine to fight hard for more than 10 seconds at a time before he has to back off and take a rest break on the outside.

Rosado thinks Canelo can’t fight hard for three minutes of every round like Cotto, and he’s pretty much right. When Canelo is forced to fight hard, he turns red in the face, and then retreats to the ropes to rest like a tired locomotive.

“I give Cotto the advantage due to the styles,” Rosado said to fighthype. “Canelo is not a guy that’s going to come in and try and take you out like Kirkland does. He’s not going to impose that strength on you. Cotto likes to throw a combination and then walk off and try to make you miss. He’s a jabber. Cotto is a really good boxer. I think it’s going to be more of a boxing match. Cotto is definitely the better boxer,” Rosado said.

Canelo does well when his opponents come at him and try and take his head off in a foolish manner the way that James Kirkland did last May in their fight in Houston, Texas. Kirkland fought like he’d never seen Canelo fight before. It was just a crazy way of fighting.

Cotto is too smart to go right into the teeth of Canelo’s offense and stand there like one of those amateurish tough man fighters from the tough man contests. Cotto will stay on the outside and jab Canelo all night long, opening up cuts over his eyes, and leaving him blind for his quick combinations.

Canelo won’t know what to do because he does not have a jab to match Cotto’s powerhouse jab, and he’ll totally dependent on Cotto coming at him to slug it out, which Cotto obviousy won’t be doing.

“When Canelo fought Mayweather, Mayweather boxed him easily. When Mayweather fought Cotto, he was caught and he was leaking because Cotto was able to jab and get shots through, things that Canelo couldn’t do,” Rosado said. “I think Cotto is the better boxer. I think Canelo will need to use his youth and impose his strength. He’s not fought like that.

That’s asking a lot for Canelo to change his style overnight and be like the aggressor and come forward when he’s really not that type of fighter. He [Canelo] fights in spurts. Cotto fights for the whole round. Every once in a while Cotto will walk off and do his little bouncing and then he gets right back in there to work.

Canelo is more where he’ll let a combination go and then he’ll take a walk for 30 seconds and then let another combination go. I think Cotto is definitely the better boxer. It’s going to be a high paced boxing match,” Rosado said.

Canelo doesn’t use his youth to attack guys in an all-out manner. He’s not capable of doing that. Like I said, Canelo can only fight hard for 10 seconds at a time before he turns red in the face and needs to back off to take a long rest break.

We won’t be seeing Canelo looking to put a ton of pressure on Cotto in this fight because he doesn’t have the batteries to fight in that manner. If Canelo could fight like that, then he might have beaten Mayweather, and his wins over Austin Trout and Erislandy Lara wouldn’t be controversial.
