Dan Ambrose:
Trainer Roger Mayweather thinks that former WBA/WBC 154lb champ Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) will be just too big for WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) in their fight two months from now on November 21st on HBO pay-per-view from the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Roger expects that the 25-year-old Canelo will use his weight advantage to beat the smaller 5’7” Cotto. Roger thinks it’s going to be a real beat down for Canelo in this fight. The 5’9” Canelo rehydrates to the mid-170s at 175; whereas Cotto comes in at around 160 for his fights.

That means the light heavyweight sized Canelo could be enjoying a 15 pound weight advantage against Cotto on fight night on 11/21. That’s going to make it extremely hard for Cotto to stand in the pocket. He’s going to need to use his jab and movement if he wants to win this fight, because he can’t be in the ring with a fighter as big as Canelo trying to slug with him. Cotto has to do what Floyd Mayweather Jr. did against the slow-footed Canelo by using movement and pot shots to dominate him.

“Cotto may get his [backside] whooped,” Roger said to Hustle Boss. ”I can’t see what Cotto is going to do to him. That mother [expletive] is big.”

Cotto definitely can’t stand in front of a fighter as big as Canelo. It would be like him fighting light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev. That’s not something that Cotto wants to do. Canelo has an ability to drain down huge amounts of weight to fight in weight classes that aren’t designed for his light heavyweight sized body.

With there not being a rehydration clause in the contract to keep Canelo from ballooning up to 175 to 180 for the fight, it puts Cotto in the position where he’s going to need to use movement and pot shots to keep out of the way of Canelo at all times. The last thing that Cotto needs is to be standing in front of the tank-like Canelo looking to slug it out with him in a primitive fashion.

You wouldn’t expect Canelo to get inside the ring with a big cruiserweight like Olesandr Usyk. It would be suicidal for Canelo to be inside the ring with someone with a big weight advantage over him. Cotto can’t fight Canelo’s fight by standing stationary so that he can use his bulk to dominate him.

“He [Mayweather] beat him [Canelo] on boxing ability,” Roger said. “Floyd boxed him. He couldn’t do nothing with Floyd. [Canelo will] have better success with Cotto.”

Canelo might have better success against Cotto if he lucks out with Cotto fighting his fight. I don’t think Cotto will do that. He’s too smart to stand in one place for 12 rounds against a tank like Canelo.

Cotto obviously knows that Canelo is even bigger than the 170lb IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. When you’re dealing with a fighter even bigger than Golovkin, you have to use your boxing skills to keep out of the way of him because he’ll be swinging for the fences from the 1st round.
