Mayweather vs. Berto prediction

Image: Mayweather vs. Berto predictionBy Joshua Broom: My prediction for the Floyd Mayweather Jr. 38, (48-0 26 KO) vs. Andre Berto 32, (30-3 23 KO) fight to be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena this Saturday night is probably just like most, a decisive Mayweather victory.

But unlike some, I actually expect the former 2-time welterweight titilist Berto to have his moments early on in the contest. I’m predicting the 32 year-old Berto to come out gallantly swinging for the fences in the first 3 rounds before Floyd’s legendary boxing radar allows him to pick up on Berto’s rhythm and pick him apart en route to a late stoppage victory.

With Mayweather’s almost certain victory Saturday night, he will move to 49-0 and tie heavyweight legend Rocky Marciano’s vaunted unblemished record in the process.

However, I don’t think that Floyd’s choice of opponent is apropos for his final fight. I also feel as if Floyd defeating Berto does nothing at all to elevate his final legacy in the sport. If anything, fighting Berto in his “farewell fight” diminishes the Mayweather legacy.

Make no mistake, throughout his stellar career “Money May” has achieved more than most fighters already enshrined in the coveted International Boxing Hall of Fame. He’s beaten men such as Pacquiao, Mosley, Cotto and De La Hoya who are either members of or will no doubt be enshrined as members of Canastota’s hallowed halls. But ending his career opposite the ring with a fighter such as Berto is just not the way I envisioned Floyd saying goodbye.

I officially predict the 5 division World Champion Mayweather to stop the former 147 lb. titlist Berto in the 8th round by TKO.
