Mayweather picked Berto to get a KO, says Mosley

Image: Mayweather picked Berto to get a KO, says MosleyBy Allan Fox: The only reason why Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs) selected the 31-year-old Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) to fight this Saturday night is because he wants an opponent that he can definitely knockout, says “Sugar” Shane Mosley. He thinks that Mayweather selected Berto because he knows he won’t lose to him, and he knows he’ll probably have a good chance of getting him out of there at some point to impress the fans.

Mosley, now 43, says he would knock Berto out in two rounds if he were to face him, because he believes he has better punching power than Mayweather. Mosley doesn’t think that Berto would be able to hurt him with any of his shots. So he would pressure him and then halt him.

It’s hard to disagree with Mosley about him beating Berto, which makes it all the more sad that Mayweather is fighting Berto on Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight will be televised on Showtime pay-per-view for the fans who want to see this event.

“My thoughts on Mayweather fighting Berto…he’s trying to get a KO. Berto doesn’t have the best chin in the world,” Mosley said to Fighthype.com. “I think Mayweather wants to get the KO because he hasn’t knocked anyone out in such a long time.”

If that’s the case about Mayweather selecting Berto just because he wants an opponent that he has a very good chance of knocking out, then it’s pretty disappointing. If you’re ‘The Best Ever’, as Mayweather says, then why is he picking out an easy mark in Berto?

This fight will be Mayweather’s sixth and final fight on his six-fight Showtime/CBS contract. The cable company got value from two of Mayweather’s fights on the contract against Manny Pacquiao and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, but they also got four mismatches with Mayweather fighting Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, Marcos Maidana twice and now Berto.

Those were guys that didn’t compare to some of the fighters in the welterweight division that the fans wanted to see Mayweather fight in Amir Khan, Keith Thurman, Shawn Porter and Kell Brook. Those guys should have been the fighters that Mayweather fought to round out his six fights instead of him fighting Guerrero, Maidana [twice] and Berto.

“There’s a lot of different people he could’ve fought,” Mosley said about Mayweather. “Mayweather just wants to show people he can knock people out.”

Berto has been knocked out only once in his 11-year pro career when he was stopped in the 12th round by Jesus Soto Karass in 2012. That was the fight in which Berto suffered a shoulder injury to his right shoulder in the 2nd round and was forced to fight the remainder of the fight using only his left hand. I don’t think Berto has a weak chin. If you’ve only been knocked out once in your career then that suggests that his chin is sound. With a healthy shoulder, Berto would have likely scored a knockout over Karass in that fight. As it is the scores of the fight were very close going into the 12th round.
